Hi !!!!!!!!!!

I am moving to canada - toronto in a month's time, i need advice regarding bringing some stuffs to toronto.

I am planning to get spices / legumes / pulses / pickles along with me in check-in baggage, would like to know are we permitted to get. Will there be any problem, as i have heard that we are not permitted but wanted to be sure if i can get so that in the beginning stage we dont have to rush for grocery if we have everything with us at home.

Appreciate your response at the earliest, so accordingly can purchase things.

Thanking you in advance.

Don't bother...these things are all easily available here in all major metropolitan areas and are often the same price, or even cheaper than buying in India.
Since you are coming to Toronto, you will find scores of Indian grocery stores at every corner that sell these things.

Unless you are coming to some very remote location in Canada, this will just increase your luggage and cause hassles.

So many times when flying between India and Canada, I have seen folks at the baggage check in Indian airports made to open their packed bags and throw out spices, pickles, etc.
Complete waste of time/money.

Agree with pratickm
Also you are asked to fill out a customs declaration form when you land..
In that if you specify Yes for these they will definately throw it out.
If you specify No and if they check your bags then you are in trouble (They rarely check your bags though but its possible)

There is no harm in utilizing your allowed baggage(2x23kg /person in most airlines) since you will find these things even though available costly comparatively. What you should avoid is the following. All other items are allowed as I understand,
Meat and meat products
Fish and fish products
Vegetables and fruits
Plants and seeds

Lots of Indian grocery stores in that area.
The busiest one is perhaps Dundas Fruits and Groceries at Hurontario and Dundas.
These days, even Canadian grocery stores like Food Basics, Wal*Mart, etc. carry basic Indian groceries like rice, daals, spices, etc.

Dude when you migrate to any country .. no point bringing any perishable goods or groceries. Its a hassle and how long before you have to venture out to the grocery stores to get toothpaste, soap, milk etc.

As mentioned above lots of grocery stores. Come here and talk to any Indian you encounter in your area or just ask in this forums after landing. Tons of Indian grocery stores. I know there is one very near Square one on Eglinton near Hurontario intersection, but can't remember the name.
