the type of work being done these days does not require IIT graduates.
it is better to have a good, competent B.Sc graduate rather than a run of the mill pack rat eng. graduate.
just having an eng. degree doesn't guarantee any quality in IT work

I am in IT and completely agree with you.
Very few smart people are required at software architecture level.
BTW, I would say BSc qualification is no less than engg. degree. You don't need engg. graduates to write good code. People like Bill Gates do not need to finish engg. degree to become a smart guy.

So why did TCS/Infy go on a hiring spree in 90s in engineering colleges and creating such "difficult to crack" exams? Does it mean that they under utilise their employees capabilities?

I have no problem with science graduates working as software programmers. It just means that those companies either erred by hiring overqualified graduates or the work they do these days require less skill than what it took 10 years ago.

10 yrs before writing code was more time consuming and need more skill set. At that time there were less tools to make ur life easier. Anybody who works in software can easily feel the difference in C++ and C#. In today's world automatic code generation is a breeze.

I remember when I first started Window programming in mid 90s. It was taking almost hrs to write simple Windows app using classic Win API techniques. Now I can write the same code within a minute and with far less stress.

More powerful frameworks are available today which can fill the nitty gritty details and u have to fill in the blanks after that.

What are you mad about, not clearing the exam or could not get into IT or that you did engineering instead B.Sc. If TCS does not start hiring anyone available they will soon be out of business...forget about hiring science graduates in India now they are hiring from other low cost centres where even post graduate degrees are less worthy of diploma holders.
Also Most of the Software Quality work is now outsourced to such centres. Don't worry about quality. US companies are outsourcing to India because they get 5 bodies to do the work which one person in US would charge. Why TCS should be any different if they can hire 2 science graduates for on BE computer?
Talking about Engineering..how many are actually Computer Science Engineers..TCS hired Civil and chemical engineers and trained to do computer work..4 years of education down the drain. Even computer engineers still learned pascal and fortran when Business world was already into web.
Talking about hiring BE as a standard.....

agree ... All you need is Google ... Java applets are readily available - 'customize' it.
