My friend, who is with fido since it started (before overtaken by Rogers) has to renew his contarct. He is still carrying on his old contract since many years just adding/changing a few options.
The Fido has given him two options (both will cost him $40 per month plus tax) now:
OPTION 1 (Two years contract of $40 per month + Tax ):
- Unlimited incoming and Outgoing local calls for all times in a day (means all 24 hours in a day and all days of the year).
- Call and Name display
- 100 outgoing text messages (I think to local numbers in his city)
- He can be in any FIDO zone in Canada (means if which ever city he is in he can call the numbers of that city for free)
- Unlimted internet browsing on a regular (Non-smart) phone set. Fido considers Iphone/Blackberry/Xperia/HTC Hero etc as smart phone.
- Free regular phone set from fido (not iphone/blackberry) like LG, Nokia, Sony Erricson, Samsung etc.
OPTION 2 (Three years contract of $40 per month + Tax):
- Unlimited incoming and Outgoing local calls for all times in a day (means all 24 hours in a day and all days of the year).
- Call and Name display
- 100 outgoing text messages (I think to local numbers in his city)
- He can be in any FIDO zone in Canada (means if which ever city he is in he can call the numbers of that city for free)
- Internet browsing on Iphone limited to only 100 MB per month, any extra data will be charged at regular rates.
- I-phone 4 from Fido at regular price of $159 (+ Tax for 16GB model) or $269 (+ Tax for 32 GB model)
My querries are:
1. Which option should he choose and why??
2. Which is the best value for him considering the present and future trends in the call phone pricing in canada.
3. If he goes with regular phone with unlimited data ( probably GPRS - by FIDO) can he use it to connect to internet from his laptop?
4. If he goes with regular phone with unlimited data ( probably GPRS - by FIDO) can he use it to connect to internet in an unlocked I-Phone bought from USA as the I-phone for sure support 3G (probably HSPA) network. Will this slow speed unlimited (GPRS) internet still work on unlocked i-phone?
5. If he went with Option 2, i.e. choosing to buy I-phone 4 with only 100 MB data, is it still a good deal as compared to deals available in the market?
An early reply will be appreciated as he has to inform the fido in next two or three days. After I tell him your advice(s) and his discussions with fido, I will let you guys know what did he choose.
Thanks.

MK
2nd option looks good.
Unlimited incoming outgoing with 100mb data with subsidized iphone is a steal .. take it as long as u dont mind 2 year contract..
On the phone u are getting a discount of 350$ which is almost 9 months free..
In 2 years there is no way u will get a better plan at wost all plans will come to this level
Option 2 - The plan with iPhone4 is for three year contract. the other option 1 with regular phone is two years.
If he go with regular phone with 2 year contact with unlimited mobile browing (not 3G browsing) and buy old iPhone or blackberry, Will the internet work on those unlocked phones??
Also, If possible, Can you guys reply to my questions in the original posting???
Thanks.
