This article is from todays newspaper...about the construction boom in Montreal.
http://www.canada.com/montreal/montrealgazette/news/business/story.html?id=8b110e3e-d603-4d51-acdc-8812b9ec3b4c

About +ve attitude :) . By reading some posts it sounds like its something that can be switched it on and off.... like, it works only in so and so market etc. Is it really like that? Shouldnt it be applicable to life, at all times, in all situations. A job is just a small part of the life we live after all.
I would think that being positive at a job interview/search should be a natural outcome of being a positive person, not vice-versa. Else, as wisernow points out...its just a buzzword.

Its a known fact that Engg jobs are difficult to get in Canada initially.

Its not your experience or knowledge that will get you an interview call. Since you are new, take care of the following ;

1. Good English accent
2. Confidence
3. Smart appearance
4. Non relegious names
5. Dont elaborate much about your country of origin etc. in CV

Apply for assistant post initially. Any experience gained outside is not valid there.

Be flexible and be wiling to widen your prospects by doing any job in somewhat relevant field.

It will take time to get recognition in Engg field.

In India :

Engg jobs are highly paid
Engg jobs have respect
You belong to upper middle class
You mostly do white collar job

In Canada ;

There is hardly any difference in salary of site Foreman and Engineer with University degree
All jobs have same respect
Being an Engineer does not make you superior to field worker
You have do Blue + White collar job as situation demands

The more educated you are the more you will be disappointed. Because you will feel that time and money spend for 4 years in University is useless when school dropouts doing labor jobs are paid more than you.

Reason is simple....There are more people with Degrees....but less people to do labor jobs..........

This was the scenario before IMMIGRATION started....Canadian whites were not available to do labor jobs and whoever were willing charged more than Engineer's salary.

Hence CANADA started IMMIGRATION........bascially more vacancies are there for labor jobs.

Engineers/Doctors and highly qualified people will be disappointed in Canada.......

Clerical people can manage...since they dont have much scope in India.

But LABOUR class people who are suppressed in India..getting paltry sums will feel like heaven coming to Canada..because they get $ 8-10 per hour, ie 100 bucks a day ie 2500 pm If both husband and wife works they make min $ 4000 pm after tax, and they have millions of reasons to be happy...can afford a Car..a House...educate their children etc. etc.

Hence highly qualified people,,,,,,,, BEWARE..........

Dont go to Canada for MONEY / JOB SATISFACTION / CAREER ACHIEVEMENT

If you want LIFESTYLE / STANDARD OF LIVING/ INTERCATING WITH CIVILISED PEOPLE and Live in a safe and Harmonious community...go to Canada.

You win some...loose some...everything in this world is not justifed.

i never heard the term "positive attitude virus" thats a first for me. It is interesting that you look at being positive as being that way.

I coined that phrase for the purpose of explaining a POV. When I talk about getting infected by the "virus', the implication is that the idea of "positive attitude" should not be carried farther than is applicable. Positive attitude is beneficial, but only to a limited extent. It will be counterproductive if it is relied on more than what it is worth. There are several other, may be more necessary, conditions for success.

As for calling me 3 sigma i wonder where you get that from .....without having any interaction with me ... your assessment of me is not correct.

I would like to clarify that I did not call you "3 sigma". I use the concept of the standard normal distribution curve from statistics to describe the difficulty in getting jobs for immigrants. In a normal distribution, 68% of the population falls within +-1 sigma range around the mean. The population drops away as one moves away from the mean, implying that cases where people got jobs in a relatively short period of time are few. It has nothing to do with anyone's "personality", "communicaion skills", how "average" one is, or how "qualified" one is. It is just a statistical illustration of facts. Cases like yours are few, that's all.

As for the condition of the construction industry here i was just quoting the facts that there is an unprecendented growth in capital construction projects on most corporations.

The biggest challenge the govt mentioned while launching the project was to find the skilled and management manpower to do the work. This is just one project. there are many mega projects ongoing and more sitting on the drawing boards because of the boom right now.

Cites would be appreciated.

I would only urge you to recognize the fact that when you post your views and suggestionson on this board, especially about jobs and opportunities, there are people who will believe you as if it is the gospel. They will trust you for your word, and take very grave and critical decisions that will affect their lives and that of their families. They will do this in the faith that what you have said is factual and accurate! For whatever reasons, tomorrow if things do not work out for them, how much responsible will you want to be? My request is only request you to try and ensure that one does not get hurt by your excitement and fervour about "positive attitude", "communication" etc being the ultimate elixir for getting a job in Canada.

Wisernow, .
If you have any hard facts to present which negate what i said about the construction industry , please present it maybe i'll also learn something ... just presenting smart alec and inaccurate views only harms those who are looking for factual situations about the construction industry here .
here is a news item on the job prospects in different industry sectors in canada.
http://biz.yahoo.com/cnw/040316/manpower_outlook_surv_2.html

and here is a page which would give you a trend of shortage of manpower in construction .
http://www.apprenticesearch.com/fpCorporate/corporate_Rescon.asp
I feel pained to see so many of my country men sufferring in Canada despite having education and ability to do much better . I also feel pained to see that most of them suffer from a peculiar defeatist mindset which looks for problem or possibilities of failure even when an opportunity is presented to them.

People will not decide to come to Canada because "i" say things are good in construction industry here . They make their own life changing decision based on many other factors affecting them , my views are not "Gospel"...please ...you are blowing it out of proportions .
I would urge you to present your views on facts alone , not on just negative perceptions . Your negativity is infectious ...i may not get affected by it but many of those who are struggling here may just lose all hope and stop trying.

The funny thing is that for every positive FACT i mention here ....there are always a bunch of people eager to jump in to say how wrong i am and how i am making people suffer . I think people with views like you are responsible in big way for the gloom in our immigrant community.
please open your minds , you will see a different world .

i am just presenting the hard facts ...not pulling anything from thin air like you. The facts are that construction industry is booming in GTA these days . You should attend the Builders and contractors seminars in GTA, where shortage of skilled manpower is a major topic of concern ....If you still dont believe me and think that i am affected by "positive attitude virus" then God only can remove your blinders .... I am not telling anyone that a job is guaranteed for them ...all i am telling is that the conditions are good for construction industry which is the question of the thread . And if anyone can benefit and find some prospects then you are depriving others by negating me without knowing any hardfacts.

You might want to read a related thread ..

Our world view is pretty far apart .....thankGod I dont think like you ...but i hope after reading this with an open mind you are wisernow !!

I can almost visualize you frothing at the mouth as you wrote this. :D Incidentally, I did NOT give ANY views at all, let alone "smart alec" and "inaccurate". I only suggested that immigrants do due diligence on their own before reaching conclusions.

My dear sir, the OP in this thread was "Prospect of an Experienced Civil Engineer" Your suggestions and pointers imply prospects good for Bricklayers, Labourers and Cement Finishers. The shortage of manpower in the construction industry is for skilled workers and labourers. None of the cites that you have given talk about shortage of "civil engineers".
I take the liberty of quoting one of the earlier posts on this thread:
Quote:
"Somewhere in the forum I saw Civil Engineers with design background can find jobs easily (comparatively) than others.
What about Civil Engineers with Construction, Contracting and Project Management experience?"
Unquote.

I response to such questions, you say that that the prospects in the construction industry are good. Yes...good... but for whom? Good for brick layers, masons, and other skill related labourers! Not for immigrant engineers with "design" background and "project management" experience. Please reflect on what you have posted and how well have you addressed the question in your posts.

I do not agree with this view of yours about fellow desis that they "suffer" from something that you do not! They would not have immigrated if they had a defeatist mindset. No one who comes here comes with a defeatist mindset and nor do they evolve one here.

Quote:

I did not say they would. But what you say is certainly likely to influence the decision of some of them, especially the gullible ones.

Quote:

As I said, I have not presented any views. I do not have to present facts because facts speak for themselves. Please take a look at the "polls" section of this very website. On the question "What is most difficult thing to get in Canada?" a full 78.7% have responded with "Job in own field". That is FACT! ok? The fact is that when you do a search for the key words of "civil engineer" on monster.ca you get back ONLY 16 results for the whole of Canada compared to 232 for SAP! That is FACT!

I have been aware of the thread and quite appreciate what you have mentioned because what you have said pertains to the topic of that thread. It is a suggestion for immigrants who are already here. It is another way of getting oneself "re-educated" by learning a new skill. That's fine for anyone who wishes to. No problem there. But that is not relevant here on this thread where a person wants to know the prospects of a civil "engineer".

I would appreciate if you had exhibited more maturity by avoiding such personal characterizations.
I assume we have both made our views adequately clear and consequently, I do not see the need for further rejoinders to my post from you, especially with such abrasive tones and uncomplimentary language.

Hi!

I am a Graduate Civil Engineer with 16 years of project and engineering experience in India with a big company. Can anybody guide me on the job opportunities for Civil Engineers in Toronto at present.

I would also be greatful if someone can tell me how PEO rates an Indian Civil Engineering degree from reputed Indian Universities for granting P Eng. Do I have to appear in any technical exam?

My PR application is currently under process.

Sandi,
Enough has been said on this topic...you are smart enough to make your own judgements....after arrival contact me and i'll be glad to introduce you to the construction companies i know .

Good luck !!
Samir
