Hi,

Just checking from Waterloo students/their parents as to what is the likely monthly cost of living - excluding stuff like room/meal plans, phone, books, medicines, clothes etc.

I wanted to know the amount a student generally needs to have to be able to live decently -without the means to be able to party.

appreciate your views.

The last three are the "important" categories that need be considered.

Freddie:

$ 600 for room looks pretty steep. Are you refering to student dorm rooms? Five years ago we could rent a room for $400 a month($200 for the summer term, as many students leave for summer and rentals back then used to be very competitive during these months) in an upper middle class gated community.

However, I never cooked desi food when living with Canadians.

newboyo:

Try this link for updated rates, maybe Freddie's post reflects on current prices.

Some of the Major expenses are like maintaining a second family, hence, it will be worth finding an institution close by where you live. If you can commute or the student can do it too, alternatives have to be explored prior to even buying a property. Many of us do not take this into consideration when we buy a house for our comforts. Some times you will ask yourself is it worth buying a house at all to live in Canada. That is another subject matter that calls for more input. More on it at a later date.

As regards the expenses, a trip back to parents place a Movie and a meal out side of the canteen surroundings, local travels and any other special needs are subject to the scrutiny, an hair cut or a trip to the dresser and the cost of foot wares etc., which you might be aware of them too, are expenses to be met. Some have different food habits altogether, and living at home is the only alternative, and hence all of this is not an issue, except commuting.

Do tell me where the heck will they have time to do everything unless they are burning the midnight candle.

So, be guided by it.

Freddie.

Most of my postings are estimates and are capped. If they are lower or less, then it is
within the estimated amount.
Here are some decent apartments and rates that they charge. They are in the co-op housing. : http://www.wcri.coop/Housing/rates.aspx

In some dormitories, they have started to load them up in upper and lower bunk beds. Be prepared to see them here too. All of these are slowly creeping up. Be aware of that.

Freddie.

Thanks everybody - room rates/food etc is not the major issue as the student will live in Rez.

Just needed to check how much "discretionary" money should the student have - like the fable "not too hot, not too cold, just right".
