Egg and Chicken question..Which came first?
Does one have to have significant Database experience to switch over to Datawarehousing? Can somebody with two years SQL experience switch to DWH? I do not have database design(Normalization of tables, UML etc) and DBA experience.
Also, how easy is it to switch between DW tools if your conceptual framework is sound? I do understand employers look for tool specific experience while at the same time conceptual clarity is expected from the applicant.
I ask this because several DW tools (rather than a single tool) are being suggested in previous posts. I plan to go for Cognos training, but somebody(he's not very sure about it himself) tells me its mostly mainframe oriented and I do not know DB/2.

Wrong! Not only DB2, but Cognos could connect to a variety of databases such as SQL Server, Oracle etc. very effectively. I am currently using Cognos with Oracle for DW development. In fact, I do not have any knowledge of DB2. We are running it with Oracle and on Windows servers. So, it's a wrong assumption that unless you know DB2 or have a mainframe expertise, you can't work with Cognos. I personally find Cognos pretty interesting to work with. However, there could be limitations of using Oracle with Cognos, but you will find the limitations with each backend/platform if you Google it.
Unfortunatley, I can't comment on other DW tools available in the market, as I only have experience in Cognos. Nevertheless, I believe the basic concepts behind any ETL tool is the same. If you master one, it's not difficult to move to the other. You're good to go even if you have a basic understanding of database concepts.
I would recommend you to search job boards for Data Warehousing, and at the same time what tool interests you (based upon your experience). This should provide you with a basic understanding of what might be prevailing in the market now.
Hope it helps.
Now a days most of the cognos projects in US are quite short term. I don't know much about Canada market.
