I'll narrate our experience. We use the Indian grocery stores to buy all Indian spices and pulses such as Dal, etc. Also, we go to an Indian Grocery stores to buy the vegetables which are not available in the regular mainstream stores like Price Chopper, Food Basics, LobLaws, etc. An example of vegetables and pulses most likely to be found only in the Indian grocery stores are Karela, Methi leaf, Curry leaf, Tur Dal, Chana Dal and so on.
However, the difficulty we faced with the Indian Grocery stores is that they are nearby to where we live - but being a rice and curry man we do the weekly trek to the store to stock up on the vegetables and pulses.
One thing that I have noticed is:
Most of the desi stores have prices that are similiar to the major grocery chains (which is reasonable I suppose) however the Chinese stores have comparitively lower prices on some products. So if you'd like to comparison shop once in a while walk into a Chinese store as well.
There is one at Hurontario / Creditview in Mississauga.
