For your condition, if you are going to use for emergencies then the best options are:

1. Koodos- $15 per month, No networking fees and no additions. It is a CDMA phone and hence no fancy hand sets.

2.Go to Walmart this week some form of promotion is going on.

3.Virgin mobile - prepaid card, you can use $15 for 45 days. Your perminute is around 16 cents both incoming and outgoing.

4.You buy prepaid phone from PETRO CANADA for around $50 and load about $50 and it can be rolled over 365 days. You pay a flat incoming/outgoing of 20 cents a minute. This again is a CDMA phone.

All the other schemes would say $20 per month then you add $6.95 networking fees + 911 fees plus taxes and it would work out around $32 per month. This has around 250 minutes free + weekend and evenings unlimited and free.

The best option is try to get a Corporate discount from your cell phone provider. Usually all the major companies like Magna, Canadian Tire, CPP(Canadian Pension Plan) have specific corporate discounts and if you have friends working for them, you can get some info and sign up using those plans and avail of those discounts.

I am currently using Virgin with LG Rumor ......... $100/- top up lasts you for 365 days .. @ 30 c/m .... Or a prepaid monthly plan is $15 / month(after a credit of 5/- ) for 200 any time mins ...... Incoming can be added at $10/- extra ....
