For a new immigrants don't you think this rent is too much... if someone have this much money to spend on rent I would suggest go and buy the house.

biomed, I agree, the rent is pricey for an older apartment and esp for a new immigrant, but if it includes utilities and is spick and span it could possibly be acceptable. I donno...

That said, I'm paying $1,450 pm plus utilities, but it's for new construction. Our total monthly lodging expense comes to about $1,800 adding in just a basic phone line ($60), heat ($100), electric($70) and water ($100). I don't know how much our A/C bills are gonna be in summer and am just dreading that! Still, I know that's considered high for just two people around these parts, but that's what we're paying and think it's worth it for a good place. Every other place we have seen in this city just reminds me of municipal housing, what we in the US call "projects". It's very saddening.

When we first moved here, we stayed at the Radisson for a month while searching for a nice place to live. Everyday we sallied forth from the hotel room armed with glossy brochures fawning over buildings and their ameneties, only to come back very disheartened. Turned out the hotel was a much better option than most places and the cost was about equal! (We had worked out a weekly rate with the hotel which was cheaper than paying by the day). Anyway, in the end, we decided to stick to brand new buildings only, which are really rare in this city so we're counting our blessings. Reason being, most of the cheaper places were REALLY sleazy... eg. a one or two bedroom for $950 or even $1,200 including utilities, and u can hear rats walking the floorboards! Or the water faucet doesn't work, or drips, or the paint chips or the building is not well-maintained or the neighbors are noisy etc.... I was and still am really surprised by the poor quality of housing in Toronto. Is this the norm around here? In the US we paid the same amount in mortgage or rent wherever we lived, so that's ok, but we had a LOT more options for good quality housing, and a lot of new construction to choose from. Plus, if buildings said they were "recently remodeled", they really were recently remodeled. Here, we found out "recently remodeled" means atleast five years ago!!

Now we're thinking of buying a house again, but don't know if we can get anything brand new for a mortgage of about $1,500 a month. That's the max I want to be able to afford right now and I don't want to go for older housing coz just looking at the state of apartment facilities here I know we're not going to have a pleasant experience with an older house. Any advice?
