Watched the new Star Trek movie yesterday. I am or was never a fan of the whole Star Trek culture, nor could understand the dialogues when the serial was shown on DD. However, the trailer looked interesting (special effects) so I decided to give the movie a try.
Setting aside the whole theory of human race and aliens, teleportation, time travel etc. etc., this movie is a typical 70's Bollywood masala movie. Good guys v/s bad guys, parents getting killed, hero taking the revenge, number of cliched events. Worse, there is hardly any tension in the movie. Everything seems to fall in their place quietly and conveniently. The whole movie has a Manmohan Desai or Yash Chopra flavour in it.
In fact, my dream Star Trek would have 70s Amitabh playing the part of James Kirk, Vinod Khanna as Spok, Amrish Puri as Nero, Zeenat Aman as Uhura and Pran as Christopher Pike, with some deadly music by RD Burman. The setting in the movie seemed ideal for atleast one cabaret, one "dosti" song and one love song
Now, just like the Star Trek movie, I could go back in time...........
Its a cult. You ain't in it? You won't get it. So is Star Wars and so on and so forth. A lot of my friends are Trekkers and loved it. Go figure. If you were never into it, you should never have watched it. Was it the hype that did you in?
I am not into sci-fi at all and so won't attempt to watch 'em unless there is that one outstanding flick that is technologically brilliant and has one of a kind special effects...has that "first time ever" buzz etc etc.

Like man, it was a superb flick!
I was very much into it with even an Enterprise starship hanging in my room painted in glopaint that would glow when I switched on the black light.
Would never fail to watch an episode on TV and then even watched the re-runs.
Cool stuff. 'Twas the in thing for most people on campus.
And the new flick has copies of all the old people like Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Bones and the same original lines.
Yeah I went back in time.
BTW , I am sure many of you know that Persis Khambata acted in a Star Trek flick way back when. She also was an MC at the Academy Awards way back in the 70s.
Interesting angle though, Amitabh and Vinod Khanna and the rest.
