Hi chinubabu,

Learnt from your post that your husband is a HACCP Co ordinator. Does this require any certification?
I have completed my Bachelors in Microbiology (Mumbai)an dMasters in Biochemistry(Mumbai). I have 9 years of teaching experience in a Hotel Management college, Hygiene and Sanitation in food industryand Nutrition and Dietetics.
Me and my Husband are planning to land in April, and have found on the internet opportunities in this field.

I would appreciate if I get some guidance regarding how to enter this field.

Do I need to take a short term or long term course in HACCP Certification and if yes which?

Hello,

Do you have any practical experience of working in Food industry?
I have been in QA/food safety in industry so I can share my experience there. I have no idea about careers in hotel industry.
As for courses in HACCP, check LINK
I did a 3 week course there. But I was sponsored by my employer. It costs around 2500-3000 Canadian $.
To start with, you can post your resume on monster.ca and workopolis.ca. Unlike India, these sites really work here.
Keep checking these two sites for jobs matching your profile. (The keywords for food industry jobs is "Food Science";) Use the keywords from job postings in your resume. Resume has to be good so that it can go through primary screening.
Job market in Canada is not particularly good now. But you never know...
Please let me know if I can be of more help.

Best luck!!!

Thanks chinubabu for the reply,

In my college where I used to teach Food Hygiene and Sanitation, and Nutrition and dietetics to hotel management undergraduates , we had an extensive theory as well as practical study in HACCP and its practice as well as planning of diets.

Since I have both , a Microbiology as well as Biochemistry background ( Along with my teaching experiencefor 9 years) I was thinking of taking a careerr in th efood industry in the Quality assurance dept. But I have no industrial experience.

a) Which certification will help me in gettin a start in th efood industry?
b) Where should (which college ) I get this certification from preferably?
c) At what levels with my current educational and job experience I can start from, in the food industry?

The link that is provided is not opening . Is it possible for you to give me the site address?

Regards,

Jwagh

http://www.gftc.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK
Guelph Food Technology Center located in Guelph, Ontario provides lot of courses in food industry. You can find the details on their website.
GFTC is know to most of the food industries in GTA as they not only provide training but also do consultancy in food industry.

GFTC also provides courses in nutrition and dietetics. Since you have background in these areas, you may want to check GFTC for specifics about these courses.

But I doubt if it is a guaranteed way to get a job here. It may improve your chances though...

Send me a message when you land in Canada and we can help you in whatever way we can....

Cheers....

Jwagh,

The Recession is so deep that it is hard to imagine .. especially for someone who is coming from india..

A slow down in india means that there are still jobs for qualified ppl.. here even qualified ppl are out of work..

People who lose their jobs can safely assume they have to sit home for 9 months i.e until the economy recovers..

For a new immigrant it will be doubly difficult..

So if u are coming to canada brace urself for the worst.. or may be wait for 9 months before landing..

Dont take it in the wrong way... U might save urself a lot of frustration

The Dude..

Thanks, chinubabu,
I will go on th eGuelph university site, I have also found something on Durham college an dtheir courses. I will definately message you once I land on 19 April 2009. What I planned for myself was to get a simple survival job in the food industry,/Pharmacies(retail)/ food production etc till the recessionary times( which I think frankly will not end in 2009 an dmay extend in 2010. Till then I could equip my self with the enecessary certificates and then apply in my field.

Kindly advise on this.

Thanks, dudewheresmycar,

I know the recession is deep, everyday only job losses are pouring in, but we have received our PR after 6 long years.
Minimum that we have to do is Land (visa expiry July 2009) and perhaps atleast give it a try. I have absolutely no problems doing survival jobs(call centre, retail) .
Your post shows real concern so I will not think otherwise. Thanks.

Regards,

jwagh

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for your PM.
My husband works in the same line as yours.
He got the job in his field in the food industry very early as we landed.
Currently he is working as a corporate HACCP co-ordinator in a big food industry.

There are many jobs available in this field in canada.
Currently due to recession I don't know what is the market condition.
He can provide you more details if required.

Cheers..
