Generally, an organisation sends their requirement to 4-5 recruiters and every recruiters wish that they represent a good candidate to the organisation so that they will continue the future business as well. So they never send poor candidates and that is why they called candidate to their office first for informal session.

Makes sense . But I feel references should not be provided until you have a pending job offer in hand . I would not wish my references to be contacted by every Tom Dick & Harry w/o being certain if the opportunity would even materialize .

So the process is more like this :

You visit the Consultant and acquaint him with your skills and rate .
He represents you and you attend interview with client .
Upon success you join and get your rate and he gets his .

Q - Is it possible that for the same job , different staffing agencies may provide different rates ? ~ I think we should not go ahead with one instantly and inquire how much rate they are providing . Thoughts ?

Certainly. It’s all about your negotiation with recruiters.
Right now I am working for Robert Half with 1.5 times more that the rate given by Sapphire to me with same company, same post.

Yes. It is possible that multiple agencies might contact you with multiple different rates for the exact same position.
Usually, companies have 1 or 2 or if the company is really big, may be max 3 preferred vendors. These "vendors" have good relationships with few other staffing agencies/consulting companies. So, chain formation is natural.

You can identify if the agency is having direct contact (pref. vendor) of the client. You should get direct answers to following questions, without any "I'll get back to you on this" or "I'll have to confirm this" or "I'm not sure about this" or something that's too good to be true or is not stright confident answer.

. Who is the client? (Pref. vendor should have no problem disclosing this). Most of the time you get the business line of the client - telecom giant, or financial inst or energy company.
. What is the project duration?
. What is the possibility of extension? Expect clear response here.
. Is there any possibility of fulltime opening for this position?
. Whome will I be reporting? (Yes, if it's a pref vendor, you should get this name without any delay, obviously when your interview is being scheduled.)
. How and what is the technology being used? (Yes, apart from what technology you will be using)
. When is the project starting? and what's the team size

Try a small test. Ask this .. "Did your company recently had similar opening for this client few weeks back?" Do you have any other consultants working there? .. aah .. how many?
Just to check how "deep" that consulting company is into that client.

That's it for now ..
Rate simply cannot tell you if that's a direct recruiter or part of a chain. Sometime you might get less in rate but more in term of contract length.

This makes a lot of sense . Thanks . In coming to a strategy , I would wait for 3-4 days before accepting anyone's offer to represent me - Generally 2-3 vendors advertise the same post ..... a sure shot way of negotiation seems to not go down on your rate - if you deem a position to be worth 85/- demand 70/- and not a dollar less ......... if the agency is desperate , it might let you go ahead .

Thanks a lot fellas - a q that is on my mind is if we have asked a staffing agency to represent us , and 3 days later , we find another staffing agency offering a higher amount ---- can we revoke the earlier permission for representing and go with the new one ??
