As mentioned by Anil, prior work experience is a big deciding factor in picking the module/technology.
Now let me briefly explanin about the different modules/technology in SAP, so you can decide accordingly.
1. SD (Sales and Distribution module) -One of the three base modules of SAP, which contains functionality of Inquiry, Quotation, Contracts, Sales order, Delivery, billing etc at high level. With SD background its also easy to get into CRM module (Customer Relationship module).
2. MM (Also know as SCM) -- One of the three base modules of SAP, deals with Vendors, purchase order, requisitions, material master, inventory etc...With SCM/MM background its easy to get into SRM
3. FI/CO: This is the Finance and Controlling module of SAP (two different areas), which deal with GL accounts, cost centers, profit center, AR / AP, special ledger etc. If you dont have strong FI background then stay away from this module, it can be time consuming to learn.COPA is profit analysis.
4. PP (Production planning): This module deals with the manufacturing side of business and deals with concepts like work centers, control keys, production orders, scheduling. With PP module experience its easy to learn APO module, though my advice will be to stay away from it, its not that successful.
5. PM (Plant Maintenance): This deal with maintenace orders, notification, service orders, tolling etc. Industrial engg experience is good for this module. With PM module experience its easy to get into MRO (Maintenance Repair and Overhaul) module, which is used in repair industry.
6. QM: Quality management: This deals with inspection lot, nmaster inspection characterstics etc, though i will suggest you to stay away from this module.Less demand.
7. HR (Human resources): This deals with Personal admin, payroll, personal development , time management etc. This is good in demand and compartively easy to learn. Will recommend it, lot of projects in North America.
8. PS (project systems): This deals with WBS elemnt, projects, networks etc, will suggest to stay away from it, not lot of demand.
9. TDM (technical document management); Use to store all engg drawing. documents, pictures in SAP DMS server. Stay away.
In my next post i will try to touch modules/technologies which are part of Netweaver.
Hope this helps
