For collecting EI, if you have the required number of working hours, it is called the eligibility and the requirements, you are entitled to collect EI upon getting a lay off. You should have the proper documents to prove and you can do it from your armchair.

For sponsoring an individual it is altogether a different procedure, from INVITING an individual to visit you. You have the privilege of inviting if you are employed and have sufficient means to support that individual and take care of them during their visit.

But for sponsoring, though you might have to meet the same, you have to commit yourself to support that individual for a minimum period of ten years. So, be prepared or anticipate to undertake this.
