Do you use LinkedIn or are you in LinkedIn? If so, what do you use for (job search, fun, networking, etc)? What are your thoughts? I am in there and I use it for fun just to see how many people are out there in this network. Also, I have made new contacts outside my profession.

Dimple,
I have found Orkut better esp. for networking with Indians.
I have not seen that much use with LinkedIn. It is more widely used by Indians in the UAE as Orkut is banned there.
Personally, I have found tons of friends in US, India and the Gulf through Orkut and have networked very closely with people of my profession through Orkut. However, I have found that whenever I have tried to ask them to recommend me to their company as a potential employee, they have always backed out or given the name of some other company nearby that is hiring (Desi mentality).
Hope this helps

Peace by TK

I am there on linked-in. I like the fact that it lets me know where my classfellows, colleagues, ex-colleagues are in terms of career at any point in time. Nice way to keep in touch. I get a biweekly summary email with changes in each person's profile - job related; all in one email.

LinkedIn is very professional whereas Orkut is not (I mean, it is very general). So it depends on what you are looking for. I like LinkedIn and find it very useful.

Thanks all for the feedback. What I find interesting on LinkedIn is the diversity of professions and activities people are involved in. For instance, one of my undergraduate classmates (a mech engr) is now a detective in a police force.

Hi,
I am on linkedin and find it very useful in connecting with old friends from the past and in making new connections.
Also have got a variety of work from it mainly in writing articles though and in arranging events and giving seminars.
Not much in my main profession as a financial advisor and mortgage specialist though I do get invites to do seminars and from those seminars I get work in my field- so indirectly I do get field related work.
I have a small network though and am planning to build on it so as to gain momentum.

Here is my public profile, should any of you folks wish to connect

Linkedin is definitely more professional. By the way I am an IT Consultant and visiting Calgary from 23rd May to 26th. If anyone is interested in any sort of networking, let me know. I can share my professional knowledge on the IT software development scene in New york. You are not required to trade contacts. This can be an opportunity to see how we can help each other.
