Dell has closed down its call center here early in this year. Around 1300 people lost their job. I dont know about others but my one friend is working with Convergys and he's getting $18/hr as Customer Service associate. CSR gets start with $11/hr

3 years back, my wife worked in Tim Hortons for around $8 an hour. I worked with Future Shop for $8.5 per hour. This was in Calgary, Alberta. These are the entry level salaries.

Nowadays, my friend tells me the same jobs are around $10 to $11 an hour.

Thanks.

Rajan.

How do people survive at a job which pays $11 per hour??

Like if I calculate it on the basis that it's 40 hours per week. Then for the annual, it comes out to be:

$11 * 40 * 52 = $22880

These jobs can be easy to find and at the same time very tough to find, esp. if you are new to the city and look the wrong way.
This happened to me in Toronto in 2001. I came here and was at home applying through the internet for jobs to come and which never came. What I have learnt during my stay here is as follows :

1. Register at all staffing agencies (based on your need as either low level professional like data entry or labour job). Always ask them "light" labour jobs which donot involve much lifting or repetative work

2. Try to take Security guard jobs or Janitor jobs which are easy to do.

3. Increase your networking. Try to talk freely with all people you see on the road by striking up a conversation. Topics can include, the weather, How nice a country Canada is , Oil sands and its usefulness to Canada, about cows and beef of Alberta, Ice hockey, Tim Hortons coffee , Rhodeo etc.. The objective is to see if they know any one hiring. It will work.

4. Contact your local MP/ MPP and ask him to help you find work

5. Try to include yourself in all the free handouts that the govt. gives (like pilot projects, Money for new immigrant survey, free career building workshops etc...)

6. Always try to get a evening / night job so that you can attend interview in the morning (as the need be).

7. Always try to get yourself laid off after completing 910 worked hours so that you can get govt help (by means of EI) to study free further. A lot of Desi's have furthered their career (not me though) by using this legislation to their advantage and to uplift themselves from a labour job to a semi professional entry level job

In conclusion :
Though a lot of the "so called" labour jobs are there, unless you tap into some one who can give you insider information / reference to the labour job, you will find yourself at the wrong labour job and start hating life and Canada in a few weeks. If you see the Sri Lankan's or the Punjabi's, one of them first finds out a company in which the work is light and the pay is more and then he brings all his fellow men in to that company when they hire.

Hope this gives you an indication on the challeneges facing you for labour jobs in Canada.

Peace by TK

Thanks for your replies TK. Is US experience considered while looking for jobs in Canada (both professional & survival). I have 4 years of teaching/research/industry experience in electrical/electronics engineering. Also I worked as a cahsier in a store when I was in the University for almost 4 years working part-time. Does all this count when I look for jobs in Canada
