hello Cd's,
Just wanted to see how the health of my fellow Cd's is after coming to Canada and living a couch potato life.
on my recent trip to Europe, some of my relative doctors saw my bulging belly and told me to get an annual health checkup. My local walk in did not have a annual health check up plan but they did test me for various ailments. I was diagonised with High blood pressure (146/92) and High colestrol 5.6 (Optimum 5.2).
My life style changes for counteracting the above ailments is as follows : (My weight is 200 pounds)
Morning breakfast of Cereals (No added Sugar)
Milk is Skim milk
Very limited salt
No Beef, Pork, Mutton or Chicken Skin.
Normal lunch with Rice and Subzi
Snacks are fruits.
Coffee / Tea with only 1/2 spoon of Sugar
Dinner is only salad or steamed veggies and baked Salmon. if still hungry Skim milk or sugarless milk shake / w fruits.
Vigerous excerise each day inthe Gym for 3o mins. urning atleast 400 calories.

Will my plan work?
What have CD's been diagonised of and what is their plan to counteract this?
I hope to visit this thread in 4 months time and post my ffedback.

Views appriciated.

Peace

Me and my husband were on South beach diet and it did wonders for us but we are non vegetarians. The diet offers variations in food if one is Non Veg. Veg people can also do it but then choices are limited. My husband from 190 pounds is now 155 and I came down from 130 to 110 lbs.

Let me know if you'll be interested in knowing more of SBD.

TK high blood pressure is something that is not only common in Canada but is also very common in India. South asians are especially prone to high blood pressure due to our lifestyle and diet.

You have done the right thing by getting the blood works and checking your blood pressure. You should now maintan a file of all your blood works as this will be your reference for any future check ups.

You are aware of the dietry part of it but i must stress that you need to get some physical excercise also.

And last but not the least "be happy"

I would like to know about diet plans. The only thing that scares me is that most of the diet routines that i followed have come back to haunt me with add ons.
I can say for myself that 'have been there done that'.Twice in my life I have worked hard and lost 20 pounds and 15 pounds following good amount of excercise and check on my diet.
I gained 15 pounds during my first job but then worked on it and lost 20pounds,got married and maintained it for 3 years but it came back with my first pregnancy. Then I again worked on my weight and lost the second 15 pounds but then it stayed for 1 year and came back with my second pregnancy. Now I need to loose 30 pounds to come back to my normal weight.
I am 'Pleasantly Plump' and desparately want to but cannot find time to go out for jogging or gym because of my kidoos. Is there any plan that can help me loose weight and then Maintain it!

My father (63 yrs) reduced his hypertension medication by (1) walking for 1 hour everyday (2) stress-relieving yoga for 20 minutes (e.g Shavasana, pranayama) (3) reducing tea from 4 cups to 2 (4) eating one small piece of dark (75%) chocolate everyday (5) swallowing 2 whole cloves of raw garlic every morning.

Since he had been walking before his hypertension diagnosis, I believe continuing to walk just help in keeping it from getting worse. Tea/choclate/garlic *may* have just helped to keep him aware of the importance of healthy lifestyle overall.

From a number of anecdotal references, it seems that reduction in stress through Yoga provides the most benefit. Of course nothing beats giving up smoking and taking regular moderate exercise.

You may also want to switch to red wine from other forms of alcohol (Beer, Whiskey, etc) if you take any. Again, moderation is the key.

For cholesterol, diet and exercise work only so very little. It is best to watch it and if your cholesterol continues to remain high/rise, do ask your doctor if you should start taking medication (statins) - even if you might be young. Do a google search on this topic to know more.

Finally, try and learn to let go. Take it easy and appreciate what you have.

Yoga and brisk walking would help a lot. Southies need to cut down eating white rice. I have also observed that vegetarians (mainly for women) lack iron in the diet. Look at supplements (thru a doctor). Northies, please cut down on the cream and butter / ghee from the daily food. Coffee and tea taste better without sugar.

Well, I am not perfect. I love fried stuff (veggies) and pizza. But I have cut down other things to balance out. I snack a lot, so my lunch and dinner are small.
