NEW DELHI: For a country crowing about its cracking growth rate, here is a fact that should make its head hang in shame. Over 53% children in India under five years - that is, 67 million - live without basic healthcare facilities.
This means that India alone accounts for about one-third of all children in the world aged below five who don't have basic healthcare.
In turn, it also means that poor children in India, along with those in Brazil and Egypt, are three times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than children in other parts of the world.

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
Health care for kids be damned. Who cares. Our health minister Dr. Ramadoss is busy fighting Bollywood and AIIMS. He has the support of Tamilnadu CM who threatens to pull down the govt if Ramadoss is touched. And the saga continues.
Yeah, who cares. As long as they know the capitals and can count 1-100 backwards by the age of 3. By the age of 5 its a life well lived.
Seriously I hope India can tackle all these issues when they are on the upswing. The more one looks at India and China the more one gets the feeling that the consumerism is the only thing that is learnt from the west. The west is only too willing to oblige to.
Smoking is bad? Sales down in west?...sell more tobbacco to India and China. Pollution, gas prices, unsustainable mode of travel? Solution: focus more on trains etc here and sell the cars to India, China.
Everyones happy .
