I am on my maternity leave and want to extend it to 1 year. What should i write ...any ways i am not very much interestd in going back .Should i care to write or just forget it. I do have all benefits from my work insurance. Does that change
The way that maternity leave works is that you get maternity benefits for a fixed period of time (say 45 weeks) and which would be indicated in your EI payments that are being credited to your bank account. At the end of your maternity benifit period, the govt. would simply top crediting money to your account. People generally join a week or 2 later at their old job. You will get back your old job provided your old job is still there (lost by means of restructuring , bankruptcy, down sizing etc..). if your job has been lost while you were at maternity leave, then you will be eligible for another 42 (or so) weeks of employment insurance.
I have personally found people joining 2 or 3 month after maternity leave. All of them called up the HR of the company that they were working in and got permission for the same. I suggest that you call up your HR of your company and explain the situation to them and ask them if they would extend your maternity leave for the time as required. A call to your fellow workers would enable you to know if the company is still in a good financial position and if they are still looking for you to join at the end of your maternity leave.
You can also call up your local HRDC (previous name) office and ask them your query.
Hope this helps.

Thanx TK
I spoke to my HR and wrote an email.Hope they extend it.Initially i applied for 3months leave and recently recvd a letter stating that they will consider my voluntary resignation since i did not report to HR.
Earlier after 3 months I had a telephonic conv. with my boss and he said its taken care but now this letter. I ignored the Thumb Rule "Get it in Writing".
