I was just googling and found that Bajaj Chetak's production has been stopped in 2005 due to unfavourable market conditions for the schooter industry.
It brought me great pain as it was the only 2 wheeler that I had prefered from 1985. Those days we waited 2 years (after paying US $ 500 as deposit). It was a schooter which was very powerful and I would overtake buses, cars, Java, Rajdooth motor bike with it. It was very sturdy and macho and it was far ahead of beauty, power, status than Lambretta. Even the new Honda schooer (with auto gear and japanese design) could not kill the Bajaj Chetak.I was always going on 60 Km.ph. and I clocked a max of 80 Kmph on village tar desolate roads. It is said that Bajaj auto would continue to produce spare parts and it is selling the last scooters in USA (as I belive that no one in India is buying it anymore).
It was written that Bajaj Auto will concentrate on its motor bikes.
We have never experienced any break downs in its life time (1985-1997 when we sold it and I bought anotehr second hand one for the period 2000-2001). My fatehr used to regularly clock 100kms a day in it for 4 or 5 years. He sold it to buy a Kawasaki Bajaj (in my absence). Even If I return to India today, I would buy a car for status and a Bajaj Chetak for my regular transport.
Any Bajaj Chetak lovers in this forum and their views/ experiences?

We had one, my brother used to ride it. I never liked scooters as I am not in favor of front leg brake. My brother had a great time on it, zoomed everywhere when there was not much traffic like now. Dont remember getting it repaired.
Only item I did not like was the bulging back. Had problem sitting in the back seat. Look at the sleek new brands from kinetic etc.

I am a die hard Chetak enthusiast . From 1991 when my dad brought it for me , it has been providing the same service till date with minimal expense and I rode it everywhere even on my recent Indian trip.

With its rugged suited to Indian roads design and its tremendous load carrying capacity plus low running costs it was rightly value for money for years.(For lower middle class even providing complete 4 in a family transport) :)

My mechanic told me that they may be re starting the production of Chetak .

Hi,

I have two of them. One 2004 and other 1982.Great thing is that, we use them once in year or two and they just get start in one kick.Only thing required is to bend scooter on the kick side and there you go.
I love that scooter. There was a time that you have to wait for couple of years to get chetak scooter.

Bye

I was using Bajaj-Chetak for for few years.
I was alone in my college those days using this scooter
