As an Indian CA there won't be any exemptions; you will likely need to take a university course in addition to writing various intermediate examinations (including the CKE in Ontario) before qualifying to write the UFE (Uniform Final Examination). You will also need to be employed by an accounting firm to be able to register as a CA student.

Recently, I read somewhere on the net (I will try to provide the link) which says that ICAI has come to some understanding with CGA of Canada. According to that Indian CAs have to write only 5 papers instead of 16. If this is true, do you think it is a good idea to get this certification first?

Not aware of what credits you would get as a CA or a CPA in the CGA program. Depending on how your credentials are assessed however, you could be assigned 'challenge examinations' as part of the CGA program. Challenge examinations mean that you only write the final examinations, you would not submit assignments. In terms of costs this is far lower than going through the full course, as well as requiring a lesser time commitment.

Second thing which is impressing me is the bullish stock market all over the world including Canada. I also see the lavish salaries and benefits of Financial Analysts. As such I am seriously looking at Canadian CFA which would open the gateway for me into this field. I have written to them to know about th possible exemptions I might get.

The CFA is not a Canadian designation it is American. As another poster has commented below, it will not guarantee you a job in Canada in the absence of related work experience.

However, while you will not receive your CFA charter without appropriate 'investment decision making' experience, employers are known to hire students in the program (after completing 1 or 2 levels). Without related work experience however, you would be hired in lower level positions, which you might find to be quite demoralising if you have significant previous managerial experience.

Getting a Canadian / North American designation will significantly enhance your marketability; however, it will take a commitment of both time and money. Many immigrants prefer to take the first call center job that they find, rather than commit the time and money to upgrade their qualifications and demonstrate their adaptability to a potential employer.

Hello,

Going thru various threads, posts regarding CPA reciprocity the following is clear.

1. CPA has to be obtained before landing in Canada to appear for CARE

However request for clarifications on the following:-

1. There have been cases where the appeals commitee has allowed the candidate to sit for CARE even if the person obtained CPA after landing in Canada.

Surfing thru the net found a case of a Mr Iqbal Merchant . However he says that he got thru because he was represented by a prominent Bay St lawyer retained by his employer.

Are there any CD's who have information/ knowledge about the appeals procees with CA, Ontario.

Is there any hope of appearing for CARE such as my case wherein I am an Indian CA who appeared for CPA before landing in Canada ( once - did not clear in that attetmpt) , however passed the exam after landing in canada. ( subsequent attempt)

Direction as to how to proceed would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rajiv

This is a long shot. Do not waste your time thinking about this. In Most of cases they do not agree to.
