If the house is in the joint name (both spouses). If one has to sell when the other one is not in Canada, should there be a GPA when selling? If so should that be from a lawyer?

Yes, you will need POA from your spouse. You can get one made here by your real estate lawyer and then send it to your spouse. Once the same has been attested by an officer at Canadian Embassy/High Commission, it can be send back to you/lawyer in Canada.
Your bank/financial institute can ask you to show original POA, in case you have mortgaged your home.
POA can be either specific to the sale of subject property or general. Please seek legal advise from your lawyer on this question.
