Check out these links. My client is closing on their home in Mississauga next week and they found this information helpful.

First you do not have choice between the companies. Enersourse is hydro supplier, Enbridge is gas supplier and water is Peel Waste and Management.

You will get a invoice from all these three companies once you close your house. It is generally handled by your lawyer as he informs the uility companies about your move and all these companies take meter reading as on that date.

Be careful about couple of things:
In the first invoice from Enersouce (Hydro) you will get a charge of $280. Call them and ask them to reverse. For that they will do yor credit check and charge you $15. I made a choice of paying $15 rather than giving them a deposit of $280 for one year.

When you move, you will find lot of agents representing enersource and enbridge will come on your door for fixed rate contract for 5 years. They will try to put foot in your door and are very agressive. I did not want the fixed rate contracts so I made them shut up. One guy was too agressive and asked me to show him the invoice so he can tell me whether I am being charged properly. I told him to better leave my property otherwise I have to call police.

This nuisance you will face in first three to four months and do not get intimidated. Decision and risk are yours but make a informed decision than than a rush decision.

The first invoice that you wil get would not have your name. You need to call these companies to give them your details. The charge is $30 for set up and you can not avoid that.

Hope these answers your Q.

If I am reading this correctly then it seems like I really don't have to call and get the connection transferred to my name .... This would happen automatically and once I get my first bill I call them and give my info. Is that right ??

Also somebody suggested direct energy ... how is that ??

Thanks

Some lawyers will not call the utility companies and the onus will be upon you to call them and inform them about the change of ownership. So do not assume that your lawyer will do the necessary.

Yes you do not need to call. Enbridge bills you monthly. Ensource and Peel Water bills you every second month. Their cycle is Jan, Mar, May and so on.
The first bill you will get will addressed as "New Owner" and property address.

Direct Energy is an agent who sells gas, hydro and maintenance contracts. It is your decision whether to go with them or not. If you enter into contract with them what will happen you will keep on getting bills from enbridge and enersource with rate contracted with direct energy. Direct energy in only going to bill you for maintenance contract if you enter into one.

I have entered into no contract. My advise for you is to go and settle into your house. You can enter into contract at any time. These people will bug you in first three to four months. Just know to say "NO" till you are comfortable.
