Hi

If I have a choice between 2 job offers.

1) Job pays 63 K US $ in Detroit. Will have to do daily commute of 1 hr each way from Windsor. Canadian PR and US H1B.

2) Job pays 55 K CAN $ in North York area of Toronto. Will be renting apartment in same area. 5 mins walk. No need to use car except on weekends.

Assume this is for the same firm - same type of work, same amount of workload.
Which do you feel is a better option ? Which will proviode me a better standard of living and savings rate ? Which would most CD's take ?

What are your priorities?

Some people may find the commute time/distance a major factor.

You need to determine where you prefer to live. Do you want the hassle of dealing with two countries laws/policies regarding income tax, border crossing each day etc.

Lastly: Im not sure about Ontario, but professionals in BC who have worked in the US have their american experience often discounted as foreign experience and considered 'lack of canadian experience'. If you plan to work in Canada down the road, would this be a consideration?

good luck in your decision.

False, US experience counts much better in IT. Hopefully in other areas too.

Yes, I could understand. US Professionals need to shed their professionalism to get accustomed to this snail paced environment. Your US throughput will not be acceptable, here you need to consider the environment, take ever long to make decision, keep talking, talking, talking, keep commenting others work, communication skill etc.. Arrggggh!!!!!!

As in the Lion King movie, "Be prepared"......

I am able to understand that I am not answering OPs original question.

If commute is of big concern, think about this. You move to Tonroto for a job in Downtown or in proximity. You could live in an Apt and commute to work within 45-50 mins.. once after a year, you may want to move to suburbs to live in a decent accomodation such as Mississauga, Markham, Brampton etc.., your commute becomes 1.5 hours each way and you pay a fortune for the commute expenses (Pay three different transit, YRT/Miss. Transit, then Go Train then TTC)...still you'll be paid much more less compared to US...

TC,
What MR said is true. You need to consider your priorities in life.
I would take the USA job for sure and Contrary to what MR said, in IT, there is actually no need of a Canadian Experience to get a IT job if you have medicore communication skills.
It also depends on the company. I would go for the better and bigger company to be on the safe side. I have heard that many IT companies can/will lay you off without reason. So to this effect , I would prefer reputable co.
Let me tell you what i see :
Windsor job - >

Advantages ->
1. Ability to still fulfill residency requirements for Cdn. Citizenship and possibly Greencard.
2. You still contribute to US social security and eligible for Cdn. OAS and possibly CPP.
3. Spouse can study in Canada in OSAP and you get a big salary
4. NEXUS can make you bypass most traffic jams.
5. Low rent when compared to GTA
6. Better behaved office staff in USA, More benefits in the office when compared to Canada like free food, snacks, benefits etc...

Disadvantages ->
1. Less Desi population
2. More Crime Rate than in Toronto exp. I am talking of Detroit

Toronto job - >

Advantages ->
1. More Desi population
2. More Desi Groceries and cheap groceries
3. Cultural Melting pot.

Disadvantages ->
1. Tighter economy
2. Higer rent and may be lots of Ghettos
3. Work standard is defenitely lower than USA towns (depends also on the office)

Hope this helps you.
Dimple 2001 will help you further.
For any help, Please donot hesitate to PM me.

TK,
Arent all desi groceries avail in Windsor.
Also if some items are unavail in Windsor wont they be avail in Detroit ? - How big is the desi pop in Detroit ? (not that desi pop really matters to me as long as most simple grocery items are avail)
I am hearing same thing - that when the time comes to buy a house most decent middle/upper middle class areas that are close top being affordable are at least an hrs drive from Union station.

I would go and check out Windsor & Detroit, even before considering my Priorities.

It's an individual decision - but by asking here, definitely you'll get to read different minds.

I have lived in Windsor for some months and I still go once in a month or two. After living my life in fast paced Mumbai & to an extent Toronto. I could not get used to Windsor. Too slow for me.

To me, within 'Snow Belt'... 8k is not worth a jump.

Maharaj,
Snow Belt ???

Ive heard Windsor has the warmest weather in Ontario.

As far as pace of life. I know Windsor is slow paced but is Detroit slow paced too ?

Yes I am planning to go and check out both places within a couple of months. These offers are from the same firm I currently work for so its not a rush.
