Despite the publicity, Umrao Jaan failed to draw even initial audiences, let alone become a success. Sadly, there is nothing about its post-release reports to offer any hope for its future prospects.

Has anyone seen this in GTA?
It has been the same with DON and Janemaan have also been duds at the box office. The same phenomenon has happened in tamil with Simbus Vallavan and all others failing with one winner of Ajiths Varalaru.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
Watched Umrao Jaan yesterday at Famous players theater. By interval we (my wife and I) were thinking of leaving the hall. Infact seriously thought of getting into Don running in the adjacent theater but then decided against it since had heard even worse reviews of that remake.
UJ has gorgeous dresses for Ash but besides that offers nothing to hold you there. Infact the dresses are so beautiful that you look more at them then at Ash! Abhishek seems to have lost most of his talent that he has shown in some recent movies.
Shabana as usual is great!
Overall - worth only renting a DVD for the whole family then spending almost $11 per person in the theater.

Songs of the original Umrao Jan brought National Award for
Singer Asha Bonsle and Music Composer - Khaiyam.
Pure absence of good music in the copy version, added to its failure to impress.
