Could anyone provide information on the procedures and expenses of Medical & Dental coverage in Canada.

I am a new immigrant, and would like to know the system in Canada.

Which province are you talking about?

For OHIP (Ontario), see http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohip_mn.html

OHIP pays for doctor's visits and specialist but does not cover medications...............but which province are you talking about?

If you are a \"DESI\" the best option is make a round trip to India($1250 off season) and get the minor procedures and Dental work done. It can be called as a medical vacation.

It would cost thousands of dollars to get a good set of braces for teeth. If you have to extract or get root canal done then you are looking at $300 +. This is not covered by OHIP and you are lucky if your employer covers it. While in India it would cost $50 to $100 to get the same thing done without wait.

If you have major ailment like open heart surgery or similar ones then Canada/hospitals is the best option as you do not pay for the same, provided you have a good insurance coverage to pay for the medicines.

When I landed in 2003, eye exams were free and later it was made payable. It is said that in the next 3 to 5 years, 50% of Ontario's budget would be spent towards health care and I do not know what else would face the axe.

Welcome to Canada ! - where there is a sucker immigrating every minute.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Dentists quote a lower rate and also it varies from one to another if you do not have any insurance. To get an idea, you can call up couple of dental offices from yellowpages and ask.

If the cavity is in front teeth and visible from outside, they would probably do white filling. White filling is more expensive than silver amalgm. Some dentists do not do silver amalgm at all.

I have done the filling, and it cost $ 332.00
$ 125.00 for the doctors fee
$ 55.00 for X-ray
$ 152.00 for the filling.

I am giving these fees for the new commers a rough idea.
it could be more if it is more complicated.
