I would like to know how does the process of background check wrt refrences work. I understand that once you have qualified the Interview and before being inducted , background checks will be made regarding your criminal , credit and work history. Specific to work history my doubts are :
1. Are the references generally contacted by phone , email , fax or either of the 3 ?
2. What kind of questions are generally put up and how long does this communication last ?
3. In case the ex managers are no longer there would colleague reference be sufficient ?
4. What care should one take while providing references.
I would appreciate if experienced people can share their knowledge on the above.

The counceller in charge of our case had called our office to talk to my husbands boss. he could not get hold of him and luckily for us was willing accept the letter later on. he had 2 question
1. if the company actually existed bacause there have been ppl who have used phony companies to show employment. he was calling to find out if the company was an actual functioning company. so it would be behoove you to let all ppl in your place of work (atleast the ones you are directly in contact with know that there maybe somone calling.
2. the main concern of the counceller is that you actually worked in the place you say you did. but this can be avoided by getting your boss to write a letter and give his direct line.
if your manager is not there any more it doesnt matter : talk to the person incharge now so he can look up your emploment history and is able to verify incase of a call.
make sure you have a cordial relationship with the referance you are giving.
give as much proof of employment in the beginning so you dont get a call. e.g any letter you have written in official capasity within the company which show your name. we had given a letter from US customs with my husbands name adressing him inquiring about some shipment. things like that which are irrufutable eviddence of your employment.

> Possibly all or one of the above modes you give them.
2. What kind of questions are generally put up and how long does this communication last ?
> About the nature of your work, role, your duties, responsbilities
> About your handling of the situations / load / deadlines etc.
> About your general attitude towards team work. any special cases and how
they rate you
> Do they recommend you as an ideal candidate with knwoledge and
expertise.
Note: They usually ask few questions depending on the answers they
might dig in with more questions
3. In case the ex managers are no longer there would colleague reference be sufficient ?
Yes, some one who can vouch for you is good enough.
4. What care should one take while providing references.
The person vouching for you must know you, your work and about the
previous work / job description / role and environment etc very well.
Rest ......lies with the Hiring Manager who is seeking the references.

As Janmeja has pointed about written references - how far are these accepted - if we submit a written letter of experience will that work ...generally speaking .?
Also can some fellow colleagues be given references of in stead of your managerial reference ?
Thinking on forbidden lines ... it s in fact quite easy to get hold of a friend and provide him as a reference explaining to him the situation . How trust worthy is the reference and back ground check process ?
Lastly - how many references are needed as a norm ??

Hi Fido,
A contactable person is usually preferred because the interviewer may have specific questions that ageneral letter of reference may or may not address. Secondly, it is acceptable to give a colleagues name/contact info in lieu of your boss (especially if your boss doesnt know you are job searching!).
Can you clarify your question" HOw trustworthy is the process?"
Lastly - It is a good idea to have three references handy..at least one of them should be from your current place of employment. If you are not currently employed then from your most previous work.
Ensure that your references have a copy of your current resume, and are aware that they may be conacted for a reference when you are applying for a new job. THis way you can ensure they are available.

My friends in Canada have given dummy email addresses as references & have given their own references in this way. They have good jobs with leading companies.
They are making good money. The friend is earning about 100 K a year & his wife is earning about 90 K a year.
Ofcourse references are only checked after you clear a preliminary interview so you must be good enough to impress them in the first interview.
