Is it easy or tough to get call center job for a new immigrant who has no previous experience of a call center job but is fluent in English.
What are the prospects? Do they prefer females? Does getting this job depend of age also, like in India they prefer people in age group of 18-24 or so?

I don't know about Call center jobs in general, but can tell you a bit about the company I work for. The core business of the company is Parcel delivery, kinda like Fedex or UPS but more Canada-focused
The customer service dept. is evenly split between males and females, so I don't believe they give any preference to females per say. There's about 20 reps in total. They've hired about 5 people recently. Couple of them look like they're about 22/24 so they're definately not very experienced. The other ones look a bit more experienced, probably in their early 30s.
What's the one thing in common about all these guys? Besides fluent English, they all speak fluent French as well. Thye've even made French must for our internal tech support dept., I tried pushing forward a friends resume but was told he could not be considered since he wasn't fluent in French.
I'm not exactly sure how much they get paid, but I would be guessing somewhere in the 11/12$ per hour area.
Hope that helps.

Are you there?
when I was in TO there were a lot of call center jobs that a new immigrant could try their hands at. I had even attended a 3 day training session by s & p for such a job. According to the trainer (who had more then 20 yrs of exp in the industry)...what they look for apart from fluency in English is the clarity of speech. Its one thing to make yourself understood in a one 2 one conversation and another when you are trying to do the same over the phone. When the other person is not in a position to read your lips and body language your style of speech delivery becomes all the more important. One cannot generalise but I have found that among new immigrants, its women who speak with greater clarity than men. Maybe that opinion is based on my personal situation. My wife is the one whose speech is clearer than mine . I am the one who is on the phones with customers.
French... I have found is an asset but not a necessity since a lot of the better call centers do a lot of business with US clients. I say this because I have some friends who dont speak a word of French but have call center jobs..and this in Montreal, Quebec! Coincidentally both these friends are women.
Not all call centers are the same. Payscales can range from 8-9 $/hr in your run of the mill call centers to 50+ $/hr in the highly specialised fields. The more specialised your field, in these jobs, the higher your income and the better you are treated. They can get *REALLY* generous if they want to retain your services.
Compared to labour jobs...i think its better to get a call center job and move on from there. You will learn much more from a call center job. However, make sure you get a base pay if you can. Working only on commissions is not worth it if you ask me.
