Toyota has given a complete makeover to its most popular luxury car Camry. Into its sixth edition, Camry 2006 has been introduced in India after a debut in US and Japan and will be pitched against Mercedes Benz’s C-Class Kompressor.
Fitted with a 2.4 litre VVT-I engine (as against the 2.2 litre in the C-Class) that returns 167 PS or a better torque of 224 as against under-200 in the Merc.

Toyota Kirloskar deputy managing director KK Swamy claims the new Camry has been tested to give a mileage between 8-10 in city traffic conditions.

It would sport a base price-tag of Rs 19.83 lakh for the manual and Rs 21.45 lakh for the automatic version as against C-Class Kompressor price of Rs 23 lakh.

Much of the new Camry’s higher tag that ranges between Rs 1 lakh to 2.5 lakh more than the earlier one is due to the 4% CVD recently levied in the Budget as Toyota will import the car as CBU (completely built unit).

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

The same model in Canada sells for much less even after accounting for CVD. See link

How come?

Looking at those prices makes me wonder....would you rather buy a Camry or a Merc?

Wow...now there's a tough choice! :D

Simply because more camry's are sold in canada than in India. It is called economy of scale.

As India continues it's dream run with 10% growth rate to become the third largest economy in the world by 2050, I can see nothing can stop this young nation (only 50 years old) from achieving it's dream.

Today more cell phones are sold in India than in Canada every year. (4 million per month).

Indian economy is all set to over take canadian economy in size in the next 5-6 years.

Once they start selling more Camry's in India than in canada you can expect lower prices in India. For that though, you have to wait several years.

50 Year Old?
Well i think the real birth of India is just 5-6 years back when indian companies started beleiving in themselves, have reached global size, started competing with teh best in the world. (All thanks to the crisis of 1991).

Economies of scale apply when a large fixed cost investment has been made by the company. IN this case Toyota has not set up a plant to manufacture camry's in India. Granted there are marketing and shipping costs but they dont justify the price. The camry is going to be a dud in India.

The earlier camry was a huge flop in India and the new one is going to contine that flopping tradtion. I don't buy the argument that since Camry is not a volume car and doesn't hve economies of scale , toyota can't price it lower. Well how does Honda sell the Accord for about 14-15 lakhs? And guess what? the Accord is huge super hit in India. DBU, low economies of scale are all BS, Toyota just wants to charge a huge premium for their brand but getting into Mercedes terrirtory is aiming too high. By the way, has Toyota thought of the silent weapon in that price - the Skoda Superb TDi? Toyota thinks it can compete with Mercedes. I guess if and when they launch the Lexus brand in India they will price it against Maybach!
