I understand you are trying to get a discussion started (good idea) but i feel your statement "Are we competing with neighbouring countries in acts like this?" is a very loaded statement...and could be misinterpreted .
I'd really love to know your position on this situation: Do you feel it was the age difference that caused the problem? The fact that the couple chose to wed rather than heed the advice of their parents? How does this reflect on the westernization of metro cities inIndia..does this happen often? what can we learn from this?
I guess I sound like a teacher eh?

The reason I posted is that often we hear about honor killings in Pakistan. I wonder what's the difference between India and Pakistan if these kind of things are let happen in India.
The point I want to make is no one has the right to kill two people though what they did is against their religious/cultural traditions.

Have you heard about the honor killing that happened in India..but ordered in Canada? A wealthy BC woman falls in love with and marries a poor guy from Punjab. Her mother has her killed (she hires contract killers) because she brings "shame to the family", then has her daughter's husband arrested on murder charges..
Why do we humans care so much about what other people think that we are willing to kill our own children? Status and 'izzat' ?
There are too many sick sick people out there... I think sometimes..........
is THAT culture?
