There has been lot of discussion on CV writing on CD. I am putting forward my perspective as I am going thru number of them for a IT position (got 62 CVs for one opening)
Desis take heart. Dont be under the impression that we desis dont know how to write a good CV. Majority of the locals have the same problem. They are no different from immigrants. Some of them have written that's totally irrelevant to the position.
Some examples - working in a lab doing chemical analysis, technician with a cable tv company, fundraiser, etc. Worst, some of them have cut and paste the words that appeared in the advertisement. The painful part is that I have to go thru these CVs. Some fo the best CVs I came across are from the CDs. They have written exactly what they have done that's relevant to the position.
My take is that keep the details that's relevant to the position. Each CV need to be different since each position requires different skill sets. Providing irrelevant details could turn-off the reviewer thereby diminishing your chances.

Thanks for your post. Its really nice to get an ' employer' perspective. I agree with you that its not because you are canadian born that you automatically have the right 'resume'. Many people do not know how to write an effective resume.
Question for you: If an applicant wrote a resume with different jobs on it (ie/ lab chemical analysis) however was able to show its relevence to the advertised position (show their transferable skills,) then would this make a difference to you as an employer?

If the applicant can show the relevant experience that's required, that helps a lot.
e.g. analysed and manipulated chemical data using a RDBMS (MS Access / SQL Server) as a backend and VB as a frontend.
