Canada's population is aging quickly and within a decade seniors are likely to outnumber children in this country, Statistics Canada said Thursday. “This would be an unprecedented situation in Canada,” the government agency noted in its latest population projections.

DIO:

What concerns you most about the ageing of the population?

What could you see as advantages?

Where do you feel most retirees will eventually go (ie/ province/city)

>>>Increase in taxes to cover medicare

What could you see as advantages?
>>>May be that will open up jobs for younger generation?

Where do you feel most retirees will eventually go (ie/ province/city)
>>>wherever they are retiring, most of the time

Sustainability of smaller towns/villages in remote locations would become a question mark, as younger people will be needed to sustain the infrastructure.

With lesser productive hands, each person who is still working will have to bear more burden to sustain the entire infrastructure of roads, lighting, water supply, drainage, medicare, schools, colleges, government, police etc. etc.

:)

My thoughts:

1) Taxes can and will increase due to increase in number of general population (immigration and birth rates)

2) I read somewhere that people are postponing retirement longer and longer now because of the higher cost of living, lack of sufficient retirement savings and because they are enjoying better health.

3) There are a lot of retirees here in Greater Vancouver. The weather (I think) is what draws people in..plus the scenic beauty

thanks for sharing :)

Can you clarify this further? I think personal preferences may make a difference - some young people will want to move to bigger cities for opportunities, however others may want to stay for the sake of the survival of the community they are in.

When you say 'bear more burden' do you mean provincial taxes? Each province has a differing population.

What about CPP (Canadian pension plan) ? Today's working population that is paying into CPP is assisting today's seniors with pensions. As the population grows older..what do you think this implies for future generations ie/ those that will be paying for our pensions?

Might make it easier to find jobs as there will be plenty of openings left behind by the retirees. Or atleast, one can hope...

Taxes will (sadly) have to go up to keep pace with all these people falling on healthcare.

Or get in more immigrants to pay these taxes so they don't go up!

Ah! Decisions decisions!
