Thank you for quotes Meghal & Chandresh.

Meghal, I am leaving May 30, 2006. I am in Toronto, Canada for last 10 years.

Yes we have to survive & to survive better I also don't think that being aloof from Canadian life is a good way of living life here but to be here we don't have to criticise India.

Our culture does say that we shouldn't have physical contact before marriage & Indian parents don't allow it, you don't have to feel offended with that. IT IS our culture, it doesn't mean that all other cultures are worthless. Some Indians just tend to respect it.

Chandresh, I have explored enough, I guess better than you do. If your definition of being explorer is singing praises of Canada & criticising India, then our definitions certainly are opposite.

I am not any old guy, I am 35 years old woman, I had all my education in India & right now am working in quality assurance in RBC group of Canada.

And prey tell me where in this thread have I sung praises for Canada?

And if you really are a 35 year young woman, with 10 years in Canada,

first let me tell you that I have spent more time in India than you have done in your life

Secondly you seem to have NOT noticed the changes, both in the thinking of parents and the children in last 15 years in India. When I go to India these days, I am considered OLD FASHIONED both by the young and my peers - and I come from a small town let me tell you.

I am neither singing praises of Canada (for one simple fact that I do not like living in Canada), nor am I criticizing India. All I am saying is that the original poster, followed by you, have a very wrong opinion of India of today. And let us not compare traditions - if you really look at the old times, the elite (the kings and highly placed individuals) had tons of extra-marital relationships and it was not objected by the society and therefore, was a tradition. You do not have to go too far - Bhagwan Ram\\\\'s father had more than one wife (and produced children by having conjugal relationships with them), and Lord Krishna not only had thousands of girl friends but a special Radha, though he was not married to her. There were tons of \\\\'dasi-putra\\\\' which basically meant a son who was conceived in the womb of a maid servant! Imagine how the society would treat a man today if a man in India slept with his \\\\'kam vali bai\\\\' !!!

Just wake up explorer and accept the facts as they exist!

And by the way, I am proud about India - and am a Indian at heart, just that I can not stop feeling sic on the way the original post was written. All it seemed to convey is that Canadians have nothing on their mind but sex (which by the way, most Indians have too - just that not everyone gets a chance to convert their fantasies into realities)

To support Chandresh's reply

Even I am not too comofortable with the idea of pre-marital relationship.

Also, ask if Canadian parents are also comfortable with their kids having relationships??? It is possible that they might not like it, but cannot prevent their kids on the name of human rights. But for sure, they won't be encouraging their kids to have relationships before marriage.

Also, if you refer to some mythological characters, think of Kunti, who had a pre-marital affair, but was still respected. In today's Indian society, a girl cannot think of having a baby before marriage. Either she has to go for abortion or live a life of hell. Atleast the Canadian society and government is lenient, and gives support to single mothers.

I had an individual who had come to Toronto for a business visit from India, and remarked how Canada was \"conservative\" compared to Sweden. His idea of Toronto was perhaps scantily-clad woman roaming around every streets and corners of Toronto.

Blame it perhaps on Indian media ( atleast in Gujarat, a journalist called Kanti Bhatt and his two demons \"Chitralekha\" and \"Abhiyaan\";) who portray West as the land of riches and free sex. So people feel quite shocked when they see the reality.

And pre-marital relationshps do exists in India, whether you like them or not. I have passed my college life in Nadiad, and have heard lots of gossips - half of them correct, half of them incorrect. But still, that means something sure goes on.

And whether you indulge into premarital relationship or allow your kids to indulge into it, your thoughts are still liberal than your previous generation. Think of it - before 75 years, in the age of my grandparents, one got engaged at during their childhood. Talking to your fiancee before marriage was a grave sin (Some funny anecdotes written by Jyotindra Dave...and going by same token, marriage of another well-know Gujarati writer CC Mehta, was wrecked just because he could not communicate properly with his wife before marriage). And now, young people do have the liberty of choosing their spouse.

So life goes on... There is no way you can stop it

Actually what Chandresh & Meghal has written about the facts about Indian History (Ram,Krishna & Kunti) we used to have debates about these Gods & their DEEDS in college & we all know this & still we pray them & worship them. I also know where India is going now & believe me I am also considered in India to be an old fashioned..! because we who are living away from India, tend to respect Indian history & culture more than people there & that is the reason those people don't expect us to be clinging to our culture but to encourage them to do the stuff they want.

But besides this do you think that in history that was the fact so today we should allow our kids to be like that ??

I am not blind worshipper of Indian culture but also not fascinated by Canadian/American life. I do respect though the way we all are brought up by all of our parents & the things they taught us & that is what I call our culture.
