In my opinion the kids are confused because the parents make them that way.
Our kids are taught by many parents to reject Canadian life even though they are living in the midst of it. They are taught that gora kids are bad and that only desi kids are good. That ALL gora culture is bad (the worst racist stereotypes are promoted here) and that ALL indian culture (no matter how backward) is good.
Their experience, however, tells them that some gora kids are good and some are bad, as are desi kids, good and bad. However, they are not allowed to exercise that good judgment and make friends with whomever they have common interests and not involve themselves with those (desi, gora or other) who they do not have common interests with. Their experience (if they are allowed to integrate with other kids) tells them that there is good gora culture and bad gora culture as well as beautiful ancient indian culture and extremely backward and bad practices in indian culture. That is, if they are allowed, they can learn to discriminate and respect the best of both worlds and reject the worst of both.
As long as our community insists on insularity for our children, they will be continue to "confused" when "canadian born".
That's not to say, that there isn't a certain amount of isolation and rejection because of racism and discrimination, but these problems are not as severe as they were when I was growing up. Children can now find a great deal of acceptance if they are also taught to accept.
The world has changed and we need to change with it.
