Not sure if you're aware of this already, but your best bet would be to join the forum at www.javaranch.com, if you haven't already. You will find tons of useful information and members to help you out and interact with.

Also, try reading the "Head First Java" book. I have read a couple of their "Head First" series. Excellent reference. One of the authors (Kathy Sierra) is incidentally a moderator of the javaranch forum.
