3. Blindly supporting capitalism
- Not true. In fact India's economy was a protected one for a long time.
--------------------------------
There is difference between "WAS and "IS".

And what gives you the impression that capitalism is being supported “blindly”? There are still a lot of PSUs. If anything, opening the economy to fair market competition is always a better option. If you think otherwise, please substantiate your argument.

4. Intolerance towards minority groups
- Not true. On the contrary, these days you stand to gain a lot more by belonging to minority groups.
------------------------------------------------
Know what the jehanabad killings were done for !!!
http://www.geocities.com/indiafas/Dalit/attrocities.htm
1984- Over 2000 Sikhs were killed and many more displaced and to this date not a single one has been prosecuted.
1992- Babri masjid riots around 2000 killed and a lot more displaced
2002-Godhra riots over or around 1000 killed andthousands displaced
Smaller riots occurred in Gujarat in 1986, 1993, 1999, and 2001. Twice in 1999, attacks were targeted in the state against Christians and their property. and the list can keep growing if I spend more time to write about it.
Dude, just because you do not know does not mean it does not happen.

Riots do not have government approval. As far as the policies are concerned, they are tailored to improve the status of minorities. Riots are instigated by groups with vested interests and are not to be confused with “intolerance towards minority groups”, because if they were the norm people would be rioting everyday.
Also please realize, “dude-ing” doesn’t help much in arguments.

6. Prehistoric and discriminatory rape laws
- Not true. What part of the rape laws do you find prehistoric and discriminatory? At the current time, the laws are heavily in favour of the rape victim.
------------------
Recently for a rape of a girl in delhi a guy was given bail the same day cuz he was the sole earner of the family!!! Sounds prehistoric and discrimanatory to me....and there are tons more example like this.

What is wrong in the guy getting bail because he was the sole earner of the family? Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Why make the family of the man charged suffer until the guilt is proven. You speak as if he was acquitted of all charges and set free!!

7. Dowry - in all it’s forms
- Why “in all its forms”? What is wrong if I willingly wish to give money to my daughter?
--------------------------
Then go ahead and give the money who is stopping you.........I thought ashirwaad was good enough :D

I don’t see what you are trying to say. The article says, dowry in all its forms is bad. I say, no! If someone has money and he wants to give it to his daughter, why is it bad?

If “ashirwaad” is all you have to give, sure go ahead and give only that. If I have ashirwaad and money, I will give that! Where’s the problem?

8. Extravagant weddings that put unnecessary pressure on parents
- Again, wrong only if done under compulsion.
-----------------------------------
Are you actually from India or what????
The way the Indian society works is magical to you I suppose :madgo:
"Unki beti ki shaadi mein to unhone ek gaadi, fridge, gas, diamond sets and all sorts of chize gift kari......aap apni beti ki shaadi mein kya de rahe hain?" Have you ever heard this?

Societies everywhere work the same way. Why single out India?

Moreover, if a guy spends more that he otherwise would because of the above comment, the problem is with the punk himself!

And for the record, yes I am from India.

15.Repeated neglect of the North East
- Not clear. How and in what way has the NE been neglected?
----------------------------------

Reading this might educate you a little
http://www.martynmission.cam.ac.uk/CIdentitypage2.htm

It seems you made a mistake in posting that link. The article on that link is about “"Tribal" Identity and Ethnic Conflicts in Northeast India”.

Maybe I am missing something, but I couldn’t find anything in the article remotely connected to the point under discussion.

You sure we are on the same page?

19.Niche malls like (wedding malls, senior citizen malls, furniture malls etc)
- Why? What’s wrong with having malls?
-----------------------------
I think its retarded and also cheesy

Retarded? Cheesy? Haven’t heard anyone say that before. You don’t like malls here in Canada?

Hello, anyone else here find malls "retarded" and "cheesy"?

20.Terms like “eve-teasing” or “roadside romeos”. It’s sexual harassment and those who do it are harassers.
- I don’t see the relationship between the two. Yes they sexually harass and are called eve teasers. It is just another term that describes the nature of harassment.
---------------------------
So you are saying "Roadside Romeos" do not indulge in the art of eve-teasing :h

Huh? Did I say that? I would really appreciate it if you could explain how my comment leads to what you seem to be concluding!

24. Obsession with America
- What’s special with India on this? Anyone from any third world country will be “obsessed” with a first world country like America.
----------------------
I am from India "a third world country" and i care a damn about the states. and not all indians are obsessive about "AMERRIKA".

Please yourself! Though I wonder what you are doing here in Canada then.

All I said was that there is nothing wrong in people from India wanting to come to the US. There is nothing “obsessive” about it and is not one of 58 bad things about India that it has to do without.
Quote:

25.The informal joint military alliance with the US (joint military exercises and the offer to permit Indian soil to be used for refuelling facilities for American military airplanes)
- What is wrong in this?
-------
Why should we….. One good reason is required:smash:

Here are some http://www.indiatraveltimes.com/news/news2004/apr04/apr0704_news.html
and some more here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1969534.stm
and some here too http://www.rediff.com/news/2002/may/29spec.htm.

As for refueling military aircraft, they are a part of bilateral ties between the two countries. In any case, US was denied this facility during the war in Iraq.

So, I really don’t understand what the issue is here that makes it to the list of 58 that India is condemned for.

6. Continually building places of worship instead of using that money for other causes like providing food and shelter for the homeless
- Who is building places of worship? Not the government! And if it is done by patrons using private funds, it is their business how they spend their money.
---------------------------------
True it is their business how they spend their money.........after all feeding a hungry person or buying medicines for poor is far way down on the list or may be not even on the list.

Look, for whatever reasons, right or wrong, if that rich man is convinced that building a place of worship, or contributing to one, will ensure him a seat in heaven, then that’s what he’d do. In any case, as I said, it is his money and he can spend it however the hell he pleases.

It has no bearing on a nation being good or bad.

31. Yellow journalism
- Exists in some measure everywhere. Nothing to single India out on this.
-------------------
I am talking about India only. I dont care about zimbabwe or sudan or amerrika

What do you want India to be? Utopian paradise or Shanghri-la?
Quote:

32. “Mindless dribble” that 24-hour news channels broadcast as fillers
- Turn off the TV if you find it “Mindless dribble”! Who is forcing you to watch?
-------------------------
Dont you find them trying to make anything and everythin regardless how trivial it is "SENSATIONAL".

Are you sure you know what you are talking about? A 24 hrs news channel makes things sensational? Any specific examples? Because I don’t remember having come across any.
Quote:

35. Advertisements that make smoking/drinking look cool
- Haven’t seen any in a long long time. Have you?
-------------------------
I still see posters of akshay smoking red and white on the billboards and on lots of walls. And also i have seen sunnydeol for the mcdowell ads.

You talked of “advertisements”. There are no ads of smoking or drinking anywhere in India, because it has been made illegal.

The ads of Sunny Deol that you refer are actually for a soda by the same name and not for the alcoholic drink.

37. Obsession with materialism
- That is for individuals to decide.
----------------------------
The point is people werent materialistic we would probably have lesser problems

Yeah sure, and I would have lot less problems if I had a flying unicorn.

38. Pressure to get married
- Again it is something at the individual level. Over 20, a person who cannot resist pressure needs to evaluate himself.
----------------------------
WE all have been there at one point or another..........:b

Dunno about you, but I haven’t met any. Honest. Not to be confused with specific cases where for example the father is old and wants to execute his responsibility asap.

43. The casting couch
- Applies universally.
------------------------------]
A lot of things are universal that does not mean they are ok!

First, faults or problems that are universal cannot be applied to single out a country for condemnation.

Second, these issues cannot be clubbed in the same category as some of the more severe and critical ones like letting criminals become political leaders.

Please understand the difference. And again, we are not talking heavenly bliss for India.

47. Item girls
- What are they?
---------------------------------
Koi samjao ise bhai????:cuss:

What makes you so angry? I hope you do not have an anger management problem.

51. Dime-a-dozen astrologers, palmists, tarot card readers
- Available everywhere.
---------------------------------
Not as many as in India and not a lot of takers here anyways

To be honest, I have seen many more ads for these services here. I don’t think I have seen a single ad of an astrologer on the TV in India.

Last but not least, arguing with frayed tempers is juvenile.

Quoting keeps in perspective the points being responded to.

Makes me wonder what 'pressure' is one referring to? the one from parents or the one of a 20 years age which is better relieved by getting married:D
