Since July 1, 2004. Collected as part of 'taxes' on your payslip, if you are salaried. Also appears on your provincial tax return (and set off against total taxes collected for the year).

HTH.

chittesh,

rajand is correct wrt the layoffs. If u have browsed news regarding Nortel, they have laid off thosuands in Canada. Ottawa is one of the hardest hit. Not all laid off have got jobs. Some desis have gone back to India and got good jobs. Some locals have changed their field. India has better stability when it comes to jobs. If u get laid off in Canada, dont think u will get a job quickly.

There is lot of hype in India abt jobs in Canada and USA. IMO, people in India misguide potential immigrants to make believe that this is a fairlyland or a wonderland (not to mistake with canada wonderland in Toronto).

So, think abt it hard. Why dont u try out in Gulf. U will be closer to India/family. Good moeny with perks. U would be better off than Canada.

OK negotiations didnt work. $30,810 is what they settled for. Here are is the reason for this:

This move is your personal request not official so we will NOT pay more.
What they are ready to do is give me a option to take 6 months leave without pay and take up this job in Canada with this salary or return back to india.
I can either take this offer or work with the above pay ($2150 per month)
Here are the pros and cons i see

Cons
1) Will have to stay in Calgary, dont know job scenario for networking and servers and desktops there
2) Job search will only be part time as will have to work 9 to 5.
3) Will work with people who make 75k/year.

Pros
1) Will not blow up my savings.

What do you guys suggest.
a) Will living in Calgary be a disadvantage?
b) Will working with people who are making almost double what you are making be a problem?
Finally what kind of life can i expect with $2150 per month in Calgary. Can i rent a 1bhk, buy a basic second hand car, not have to worry about petrol, electricity and phone bills and eat in a not so posh restaurant 2-3 meals in a week.

If not then what can i do for $2150 after tax.

Thanks,
Chittesh

wow! you've got a good deal...you get to go back if things do not work out. So take a break for 6 months and check it out. Dont sweat the small stuff.

a) Will living in Calgary be a disadvantage?
ANS: I dont see why.

b) Will working with people who are making almost double what you are making be a problem?
ANS: Not unless its a problem for you. Keep your earnings details to yourself.

c)Finally what kind of life can i expect with $2150 per month in Calgary. Can i rent a 1bhk, buy a basic second hand car, not have to worry about petrol, electricity and phone bills and eat in a not so posh restaurant 2-3 meals in a week.
Ans: An oppportunity to see what its like here without much of a risk. Its not just the money thats a factor. There is a cultural difference that many do not adapt to.
You are single so I think thats ok $ for 6 months. Its upto you to see If you can convert this opportunity into something bigger and better, if you like living here.

A question for you. If you do not get an opportunity like this again, will you be able to live with it?
