we ae residing in UAE and planning to come over in May-2004. My daughter is studying in UAE school in 6th standard and the session will be finished in march 2004. She is 1992 Nov. born. According to Canadian school's regulation in which grade she will get the admission in sep. 2004? If she will be eligible for only 6th grade is there any chance of getting an admission in 7th grade if she clears the entrance test or if she proves herself good.

I've landed yesterday at Missisauga, my family is to follow ASAP. My daughter will turn ten in November 2003. If she comes and joins school in November 2003, what standard will be she be admitted?

Which are the best schools for children in Missisauga area?

For grades below 8 or even 9, admission is not a problem. They have simple math - the year your child is born is deduced from current year (start of acedemic year) minus five, and your child will get admission accordingly. For example someone born in 1994. So the math is 2003 - 1994 = 9. 9 - 5 is four. So the grade 4.

There is no choice for schools here unless you go for private schools, which are very very expensive. You have to send you child to the nearest school.

Only local residents will tell you that the school is good or bad.

For highschools - there are some good schools in each region. The region also have rankings - like Toronto District school board is mixed, and often does not have impressive scores, as most of immigrants are coming to Toronto region and for first few years they have to struggle. Once settled people move to areas like Markham, Mississauga etc. and so these region's schools are good etc.

For higschool you can choose a school, but the first preference is given to local students, so for a good school you must be living in that area.

Toronto district school board has a website and results of EQAO test - you can compare schools there.

On rent we have lot of discussion on this site - please look at it completely. We should have some good articles on that also.

You can get 2 bedroom apartment in the rent range of 850 to 1100.

It is very difficult to say where schools are good. People consider schools in the Markham area good.

Schhols, community and area make up the rent, besides the apartment building itself.

Many people might not believe it, but I am paying $2,200 per month for my condo - because I come from Singapore (which is similar to UAE) and I wanted good school in a good community where there are either none or very few ESL students (which would mean that those students are not good in English). I live in Thornhill which is mainly a Jewish locality - but I chose it because they are considered people who give extra regard to religion/culture/family values and definitely childrens' education.

Even in condos around Finch/Yonge area, the rental for 1 to 2 bedrooms range from $1,450 to 2,000 p.m.

So Anjana, having read your questions I am sure that you have a similar background like mine - and so most probably you might not like apartments which are below $1,200 rental and would rather go for condos. Be prepared for that!!! Condos in Mississuaga and Scarborough will be cheaper but definitely not below 1,000pm. The good condos in Mississuaga are all above 1700 for a two bedroom apartment.

Dear Mr.Yogesh,
Like u , i too plan to land around July from UAE (Ajman to be precise). And coincidentally, my son too is in class 6 here. From my brief understanding, schools start there in Sept like here. And since admission are guaranteed, I dont foresee a major problem (though I am unaware of the syllabi there!)

Good luck to everyone
