DT,

Well, I can't speak of each and every Canadian, obviously. But I've found Canadians in general a little less accepting when it comes to Indians. With the majority of blue collared jobs being taken by desis, Canadians some how cannot fathom an educated south asian.

I've come across some very polite and accepting people as well, VP marketing of my company being one of them.

Other places.......get pulled over by a cop in Peel Region, that will explain it all....:)

I once called up 911 to report a crime. The dispacher asked me if the suspect was Indian...:)

A white girl I dated for a few months actually told me that her friends think she is not 'white' anymore because she was dating me...:)

Do I need more reasons?...:D

~M

Manjeet it's probably just you. I have crossed the border several times in the last 10 years and only on one occassion was my car searched by Canadian officials, that too very superficially. The US officials do have an attitude, but that's just the way it is.

As regards calling 911 to report a crime, I feel it depends on the area where you live. I've done the same in Scarborough, and they asked me if the guy looked Sri Lankan or Black. IT probably depends on the the kind of people that commit crimes in a particular area

As regards your white GF, I've never dated one, so skip this one...

To counter the above comment, I was once driving to Guelph on 401, pulled over onto the shoulder of a county road off 401 to make some cell phone calls since it was raining heavy and couldn't hear a thing over the cell phone while driving. In that 45 minutes I was on the cell phone, four different OPP officers pulled over behind my car in the pouring rain to offer help as they thought I was stranded.

Experiences can and will always be different at different times on different days.

He gets paid for it...he didn't do you a favor, he was just doing his duty(though his help is highly appreciated). And not to mention that he gets paid by the taxes you and me pay(atleast I do:) )

And yes, making trafic stops just to ensure everything is OK is their duty as well, at the same time they are REQUIRED to be polite with the drivers they pull over.

Well, as far as the border crossing experience is concerned, I 'want to' believe that its just me as I have heard horrible stories from people trying to get in the US and that the canadians are really mellow when it comes to customs as compared to their US counterparts.

But it can't be 'me' all the time......:)

I’ve have been driving in the city for more than 2 years now, and have never been pulled over ‘just to check that everything is ok’. A fair amount of that driving has been in the Peel region. I have family that has lived in the city for over 20 years and they have never been pulled over either ‘just to check that everything is ok’. I have been pulled over for speeding though, and I don’t think I had an expectation that the officer would ‘mollycoddle’ me.

If you are being pulled over frequently ‘just to check that everything is ok’ chances are you are doing something to ‘arouse’ suspicion – ever considered that possibility? - or are you getting pulled over frequently for traffic violations?

No offence while assuming so:

1. Dimple is a woman, who was offered help by officers
2. Manjeet is a turban wearing sikh, who gets intruded frequently.

That may explain the difference in behaviour.

Sorry, if above is wrong. I have no intention to offend, but just trying to find the difference reg 'why me'!

I've been driving here for almost 10 yrs...2 in TO. The only time I got pulled over was for a traffic infraction(noticed the red light too late and braked in the middle of the road). I apologised to the officer and was let off with only a warning.
I'm not turbaned nor a lady but am brown as can be. The officer was female though :)
According to the limited experience of my friends and myself...if you treat the officer with respect...they usually return the favor.
