There are walk-in clinics in every city - like the name says, you can just walk- in you dont need an appointment AND they dont refuse patients. Look up your nearest walk-in clinic in your Yellow Pages.

Just like you wouldnt call 911 for a non emergency, as far as possible, dont go to an ER for non-life threatening ailment.

Finally, in contrast to others here, my personal experience with medical system here has been very good. We did have a problem getting a pediatrician when we initially landed, but once we found a good ped for our kids, we have received excellent service. We have gone to them 4 times in the past 10 months - three times on sick visits (one of which was on a Sunday) and once on routine vaccination visit; and each time we were able to get an appointment for the same or the next day. For ourselves (me and my wife) we use walk-in clinic, there is one within a few miles and we have each been there once, the wait has never been more than half an hour. We have not used the ER system (and hope we dont need to)!

Before rushing to an ER, To recheck ur scale of seriousness :
Another option in Montreal is to walk-in at the CLSC during daytime, Or better still Call the CLSC Nurse on the phone ( Available 24 hrs ).... I have called the nurse multiple times, and usually the wait time on the phone is < 15 minutes.
You describe ur problem to the nurse, and the nurse will give u possible options/solutions.
If the nurse tells u to go to ER, then when u visit the ER, u tell them that the CLSC nurse asked u to go to ER. So now when the hospital nurse sets the priority, she will consider the fact that someone else in her position has judged this to be a serious matter, and hopefully that will help.

In Toronto, Havent seen such a service. Or maybe i missed it. One option i think is to register with ur doctor with a Family Care plan, so that a nurse is available during after hours on the phone. During daytime, u can always calls ur doctors office and talk to ur doctor directly. The only problem is when ur doctor is on vacation. Who do u call to revalidate the level of seriousness?

All I am saying is that this is a regrettable but accepted fact in Canada and the US -> unless you literally get taken into an ER by paramedics/etc. you will face severely long wait times because as serious cases come into the ER, the 'regular' cases keep getting pushed back. It is also an accepted fact that compared to the US and India where the healthcare system is not a publicly funded system for the most part, it is tougher to find doctors in Canada accepting patients.
As someone suggested there are family clinics in most cities always ready to see patients.
The person(john*) claimed that he had lived in many different places and seemed to imply that he had never seen such poor services anywhere. What I am suggesting is that if he has seen better systems elsewhere and this is a critical issue for him, maybe he should consider living somewhere else. I don't think there is anything wrong in saying that...

YK --

I was referring specifically to samosa_syndrome's declaration that if you don't like it - leave.

All of us tend to exaggerate a little when faced with such situations - it is only human.
Have you never said - "I've never seen such bad service" or "this is the worst <whatever>"?

I think we must acknowledge that there exists a problem of pretty significant proportions.

No one can deny that every country has its own share of problems - in the US, it is about affordability of health care, here in Canada it is availability.

When I lived in the US, a lot of people cribbed about the high cost of healthcare, yet nobody considered leaving the country because of that.

Why is it that when someone complains about the same issue here in Canada, people tell him to leave?

Sure, for some people health care (or any other issue) can be frustrating enough to leave the country and settle somewhere else, but let us not judge them on that basis.

Well, yesterday I took my wife as an emergency woman case to a nearest Hospital and I spent more than 5 hours for nothing except normal checkings and paper procedure done here and their.

Also later

I went back tired after I spent the whole day from 8am morn till 6pm for NOTHING...

Just goes to prove that your "emergency woman" case was NOT REALLY an emergency. Since you could manage to wait for 5 hours, and then the rest of the day until 6 PM and still go home with the "emergency woman" without precipitating a catastrophy, it is evident that your case did not qualify to be an "emergency".

Your patient might certainly have been in pain, but not all pains are emergencies, and leave alone the doctors, the nurses at the reception itself are in general quite skilled in getting to know from the symptoms itself whether a case requires urgent attention.

I waited and nothing happened as well as for all
citizens in the Hall of which one common thing was among us all which is PAIN and ANGER.

Neither of them necessarily qualify as an emergency, especially not the latter.:D

It's not a restaurent and if it's it has to deliver the services and the meal with Quality on time.

That depends on whether you are in a 5 star restaurant or a very busy dhabaa and how much you have paid for the food! :D

You can postpone a party or a meeting BUT you can't postpone disease, pain and death.

Sure! But then the "emergency woman" did NOT die, did she?

(WOW it's my 1st time in my Life I come to know that you can date
with a disease at a certian hour and you can admit the fact that you covince yourself that "hey. pain. stop now.. I took an appointment with
a Dr. next month"- cause I usually date with a woman, not more.).

Are you trying to say the doctor did not give ANY medication at all for the pain?? That he left the patient to suffer excruciating pain(as it appears from the way you describe it) 24 by 7 for weeks??

I opened an International call with my Specialist Dr. in my origin country

Which country?? I don't think I would trust prescriptions given by a doctor to a patient only on the basis symptoms told on a phone!! Unless the doctor in the "origin" country has been treating the particular case.

and she gave the prescriptions

And you could get those prescriptions filled at a pharmacy here??? Are u sure??

I never quite got that. Maybe people who say that can explain.
