Hi Partha,
Nice info from you.
One question need advice from you.
How about Oracle Financials FUNCTIONAL?
I will be reaching Canada on 16th April 2005. Got approx 2 years of good Apps functional in finance and project accounting. With over all 7 years of IT experience mostly as Business Analysts or other ERP's.
However, checked on Workopolis, shows very less openings on oracle apps. Also have good knowledge on SQL queries. But not worked on Technical like PL-SQL or others.
Just wanted a kind of advise from you as how i should go ahead to get some work either as Apps consultant / Business analysts etc. My second preference in case i am not able to get something in this line would be into accounts as i have finanace background.
Thanks
Sharma

First of all, let me welcome you to Canada.
Now, I wish I had that “magical” answer to your question “How do I get ……… Job?”.
Frankly, I don’t have an answer.
You will have to go thru the same grind that all immigrants go thru that is searching/applying/waiting and so on.
However, in your case you have the advantage of not only applying for IT jobs and but also bank jobs.
Just keep in mind, that there are some Co-op opportunities that may be available for you to gain valuable Canadian experience. One such number is 416.395.3350, 38 Orfus Road, North York, Ontario, M6A 1L6. I forgot the name of the place, but I was told that they are located in a secondary school. They will accept applications in June 2005 and the session will start from September 2005.
(I am presuming that you will be staying in Toronto)
If you have age on your side and also the inclination, then you could evaluate the possibility of doing an MS or a PhD. I am told that Professors would be in short supply once baby boomers retire.
Once again, there must be many other possibilities that forum members can write in.
Best of luck,
Partha S Lahiri
If one has implementation experience in Apps, then its a big plus. Thats the impression I got when I was in Bangalore doing the Apps courses from Oracle.
But without experience, it seems to be a tough sell, although as Partha said a good background in oracle will help.
Are Jobs in Apps (even technical) as simple as taking the specs and just writing out the code or more complicated? Wouldnt you require a good knowledhe of say Accounting or other Apps areas before you even have a chance?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
Hi Partha
Thanks very much for replying to my message.
I would certainly contact the Co-op opportunities. May i know what are Co-op opportunities?
Yes besides IT implementation, i think i would target even having accounting Jobs as core of ERP implementation is knowing Accounts.
I would also certainly plan to do some higher studies. I have identified some finance courses in demand like CGA, CMA etc.. I donot know how tough it would be or how costly they would be.
Yes, the job of Proffessor, or trainer of Oracle Applications Financials would be good idea.
I definitely believe there would lot of such people in finance and ERP area looking to make decent career in Canada. This discussion forum would be useful to all such people.
I would request all other forum members to give their feedback and suggetions.
Thanks once again
Sharma
Dilip,
Co-op is a form of internship which allows foreign trained immigrants to gain Canadian work experience in their field of expertise. If you are paid a stipend then it is called co-op, otherwise it is volunteer service (at least that is what I think it is, and am open to be corrected)
A few other thoughts just crossed my mind:
1. Before leaving India, make sure you have tied up with your former bosses so that they can act as referrals, when needed. Companies here are becoming increasingly particular about employment history and reference checks.
2. Make the appropriate arrangements with your educational institutions and professors so that they are aware and ready to send transcripts and references as and when required. It is such a waste of time and money to set up from here, if needed.
3. And finally, in case it takes some time to get the employment of your choice and you are looking for alternatives then do not rule out the financial services sector. The only reason I am saying this is because I am told some of these institutions like Edward Jones have excellent training programs detailing every aspect of professional selling. It does not matter whether you continue or not but you at least emerge wiser and richer in that essential survival skill required in North America – marketing yourself.
Good luck and have a safe trip.
