When I read all the posts that was started by suttu, I have decided to share my exp. from last week. I interviewed two candidates for a web developer position (exp in HTML, java script, Access or SQL server DB, starting salary of around $52k). One was a desi lady, in her 30’s I think. A colleague of mine, local, a veteran of 20 yrs in the organization was with me during the interview. I requested his help for the interview as this guy has interviewed hundreds of candidates in his career.
The interview was only for 30 minutes as both me and my colleague decided to do the interview together. Our desi lady somehow assumed that the position was under my colleague (but the person would be reporting to me). We never disclosed who would be the supervisor since there was no requirement for that. She always was all in smiles when she replied to my colleague and would have a stern face and a raised voice when talking to me. My colleague was amused, by the look on his face. I kept business as usual. When the interview ended and she was about to leave, my colleague told her while pointing to me “Miss xyz, did we tell you that the position is under him”.
Bang!
I will never forget our desi lady’s face when she heard. As if she had swallowed a bitter caugh syrup. I think she never expected this. She mumbled something which I could not hear as I had to leave the room to interview the other candidate.
I don’t get it. What’s with some of our desis when dealing with other desis. The attitude need to change.
I would rather hire a person with less experience who is easy going and mature rather than a highly experienced, but arrogant and annoying. Being a good team member is extremely important.

Maybe, it is that every desi sees every other desi unknown to him, as a potential competitor. Desis have come here to make better lives, to earn more money. But as the facts go, very often yehan aakey sub kuch gadabad ho jaata hai leading to a change in the way desis start looking at other desis.

What I am trying to say is that we desis have good educational background and experience. What most desis lack is soft skills and maturity. Canada has given u the immigrant status doesn't mean that u are so special. Remember, there are refugees (from south asia, europe, africa) too who are welcomed by Canada. We need to compete with others, locals and immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia, etc.

DIO, since you are in a position where you can employ people for the company, does "Thank You" notes have an impact on the recruiter? I know that it would depend from person to person and it may be good idea to send "Thank you" note but can it influence the recruiter in your favour if they are still undecided which candidate to pick?

It is professional to send a thank you note. It’s a courtesy (and one of the soft skills). That’s why one should ask for the business card during the interview. Most of the saner/matured candidates do that. I have saved emails from candidates who sent me thank you note despite not being selected. Who knows, I may contact them if they are available.
From my side, a thank you note would not make a big impact regarding the decision.
