Dear BL,

Sarkar, the word "NON-CONSTRUCTIVE" was not for this thread. My request was to avoid non-constructive posts on this topic in future.

It was only due to my fear, while replying to DTC, kdevenason & meghal that this may become one more thread of unnecessary (non-constructive) posts.

Regards,

VJ

If I am not mistaken, I have already seen this picture somewhere. it is certainly not a Tsunami but a Hurricane picture.

It says, you think it is Tsunami view, infact it is hurricane :D

Tsunami is not caused by every earthquake in sea. An earthquake due to sliding of earth surface verticaly will cause Tsunami. If earthquake occurs due to horizontal sliding of earth surface, effect will not result to Tsunami.
My guess, when the land did slide verticaly there was an immediate suction of sea water which infact appears like a hurricane in the satellite photograph. Probably photograph provided by VJ is the first instance photograph at the earthquake spot.

Here are a few things I found.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/1227/p01s02-woap.html

"This tsunami originated where two plates in the Earth's crust - the India and Burma plates - collide. A 620-mile segment of the boundary snapped. Suddenly the Burma plate's margin stood at least 15 meters higher than the India Plate. With a preliminary magnitude of 8.9, the quake was the strongest anywhere in the globe in the last 40 years and perhaps the strongest ever recorded in this region. It followed by three days a magnitude 8.1 quake off of Tasmania. The sudden shift in plate-boundary heights was like slapping the underside of a full pail of water. It triggered a tidal wave that reached an estimated 20 to 30 feet high when it made landfall."

*************************************************88

Also that big waves are generated only at the shore.

And that in deep water middle of the ocean) they are barely noticeable, something about most of the energy being below the surface.

Once they hit shallower water, the wave starts to slow down, from the bottom up, causing the water to pile up above the surface.

Any geology experts, correct me if i am wrong.

In this case the plate stood up but what is the effect when plate caves in. I am sure Tsumani is due to vertical movement.

What if water is sucked in.
