Infact I did the exercise in two installments - one in the norning and another one in the afternoon. The one in the morning was comparitively easier since there was only a very thin layer of ice. But by afternoon, it became a thick layer of almost 3 inches ice and that was really tough. If I had not removed it, I would have been locked in my house today morning with temperatures around minus 11.

dont you have private snow removal services in TO? I think for a fee of about 200$/winter they clear all the snow off the driveway after every 5 cms...AND they come in after the city cleans up(those huge rocks of snow/ice the city trucks deposit in the entrance of the driveway are NASTY to break thru). Most people in my neighbourhood, including me use these services. So the walkway to the house is the only shoveling we have to do.

I had wanted to do that - and everyone advised that it is always advisable to go with a private snow removal service who is already having few clients in your street otherwise they would usually not come to your street when realy needed, or come in the end.

I remember when I had rented a room in a house in the U.S. and was living by myself. I think the landlord was away or something, so I had full use of the drieway where I had parked my newly-purchased car.
We got hit by a major snow-storm one day. There was about a foot of snow in front of the driveway and I didn't even own a shovel. So I figured I'll buy a shovel later and took the bus to work instead (which was a very convenient option). When I got back, everybody's driveway was clean except for mine. Big deal, I thought! Then I came upon the brilliant idea of letting the snow melt on its own rather than doing all the work to shovel it.
Next morning when I looked, there was about 2 feet of snow in front of my car. It hadn't snowed but the trucks had moved snow from the road onto my existing 1 foot pile. I got even lazier looking at the extra snow and didn't do anything about it.
When I came home that night, there was about 5 feet of snow in front of my car! Apparently, some more trucks had come and seeing the existing dump in front of my car they figured that nobody was home so they piled on the misery from elsewhere. Now I HAD to shovel! When I got the shovel and got down to business, I realized that I was not dealing with good ole snow anymore! It was ice!!!
Boy o boy! Took me a few hours to get through it. Literally "nani yaad aa gayi". My back does not have any fond memories of the experience!

Special Requests: Please call me after 5:30 because I am self-employed and my employer does not know I am looking for another job
Although I had a nice drive to work but while coming back home.....boy....o....boy.....scraping the ice from window was a nightmare. Coz of freezing rain, as we all know, one side of car was covered by thick and hard ice....it took me nearly 30-40 mins just to scrap enough ice so I can see in front and blind spots, safe enough to drive the car on 401....
This is my second winter driving on 401 for commuting to-n-fro to work. Fortunatley, I haven't had the exp of car skidding or turning.....I just keep at least a distance of 3 cars from the car ahead of me....wch makes it safer to apply the brakes slowly....just in case.....infact the first snow of this season, couple of Monday's back....I had this exp twice...cars right in front of me spun and were facing me....but as I said...I had enough time and distance to apply brakes....believe me man.....during such conditions, I don't care if I am late for off....I just drive slow...
It works, I mean we should do what's in our hands...rest live it upto God....drive slow...have enough time to reach your destination on time.....avoiding changing lanes as far as possible...start early..drive safe
