Has anyone heard of this group? The website is very vague(www.rdgroupint.ca) and does not give clear idea as to how they help new immigrants in getting a job.

You are right - this website sounds vague.
However, that does not necessarily mean that the company is fraud.
In the section - what we can do for you, they describe some of their services.
You can try contacting them and see what they have to say.

If they ask for up-front money, you should walk away.

My husband was called by this company for a personal interview. In the first meeting, he was explained that the firm provides career management services which include resume building, preparing for interviews, arranging interviews thro referrals etc.
He was called for another interview with spouse ( is not that surprising?!!). We went and had a discussion, this time with an Indian. For the firt half of the meeting, he praised my husband's resume and said that they will get him a job offer from 4-5 companies in the salary range of 70 to 80000 pa or more with the best benefits.
Their fees are 4800 payable in 3 installments( upfront payment is 1600 ) and they enter into some kind of agreement with the client.

Now thro out the meeting this person was barely able to look eye to eye..and then we asked the following questions :
1. Why have you called the spouse?
He said we need to have some some personal assessment of the candidate and the spouse is the best person to give this information. So I said ..there are so many tools available for personal assessment..this is the first time in my life I have heard that the spouse is called by a firm for placement purposes. He got bugged and said..well this is our tool.
2. When there is such a big hue and cry over jobs for new immigrants, what you are saying sounds too good to believe. ..what if even after 4-5 interviews arranged by your firm, we don't get a job?
He said..then you will be the first one in the company's history of 57 years.
3. Can we see the agreement copy(draft) that we are supposed to enter into?
He said..only if you agree to pay this amount!! the agreement is a proprietary document!! Subsequently he gave me a copy because I kept insisting but he distracted me all the while I was reading it and in the middle of our discussions, when he sensed that we are not going in for it, he literally snatched the paper from me. I am sure it said they were not responsible in case the client does not get a job.

He even pressurised us by saying that the rates are going up from 1st of Jan ( we met on 29th ) and we better decide immediately.

And the funniest part is...when my husband said he needed a day to revert on this..he says..well, I feel uncomfortable now..I am here to recommend you to companies as project leader where you will be taking decisions for thousands of dollors everyday across the table and here you are ..not able to decide on a petty sum (?!!) of 5000 to invest in your own career? I am not sure whether you are fit for such positions!!!

Well..all of you must have guessed by now..we did not go for it. We gave him a counter offer of deducting the company charges from the first salary ( no upfront payment ) to which he obviously did not agree.

One more important thing..the company that is supposed to be existing since 57 years has a very vague website. When we asked for a list of companies where they do placements, he said it is confidential. When we asked for few references of people whom they have placed, again..confidential information!!

And when we went for the interview, one Indian lady ( obviously new immigrant ) had just left their office and when we finished, one more anxious looking Indian was waiting in the reception for the so called personal interview. Our interviewer did not allow us to spend even a minute with that person otherwise I would have surely taken his phone number to exchange views.

I think we have to watch out for such firms and not get carried away by the rosy pictures they show you of your future.

By the way, the firm has a plush office on Bay street and all the people who are working there ( except the receptionist ) are either presidents or vice presidents!!

anujark,

Thx for posting your exp with that firm. Can you post the name of that person? This is one way of cheating new immigrants. Note that he was also a desi. They try to build a chemistry between fellow desis so that they think its easy to cheat. Good that u folks walked out. This should be an eye opener for others.

Odd that you make a reference to Bernard Haldane.

I was reading thru the 'success stories' on the RD Group International website. A particular counsellor has been referred to in that 'story'. When I did a Googled the counsellor's name there were articles on a counsellor with that same name at Bernard Haldane.

Incidentally when I checked out the Bernard Haldane website, many of the pages, including the testimonials don't load. Wondering are these guys the same organization with a different name?

Yes, these two companies are associated..BH must be standing for Bernard Haldane. Because while leaving I took their Seattle office phone number and I was given the company name as BH careers. I had thought of checking the company's whereabouts thro my sister in Seattle but it is not worth doing it.
I am pasting here the content of the email that my husband sent to that Indian's boss ( supposed to be, because Mr. Fischer's card said senior VP and the Indian's card read VP)...let us see if they reply to his mail.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Dear Mr. Fischer,
After giving a lot of thought, I have decided to give this feedback to you.
After meeting you on 27th December, I was impressed and happy to know
the services offered by you in a professional manner. But my second
meeting on 30th Dec with your colleague was totally disappointing, to
be very frank, not to the level of a senior level management person.
All the time I kept on feeling like listening to a door-to-door
salesman talk. Majority of time was spent on telling me the same
things again and again, and no concrete answers to straight questions
like 'which are your client companies?', 'Any references to clients
who already availed/availing your services?'.
We were not even allowed to read completely and discuss the contract document!
At the beginning and during the meeting I was told that my
qualifications and experience were very good and what I need was
meeting the decision makers to click an assignment. There was a point
at the end of meeting, when I started insisting on specific answers to
questions like I referred above, I started getting intimidating and
humiliating responses like 'I was to refer you for positions where you
would take decisions on spending thousands of dollars and you are so
fussy about spending 5000 dollars?', 'Its very difficult to get a job
without PEngg', 'Our charges are increasing from January 2005' ...etc
etc
It appeared like a frustrated reaction of a junior level 'commission
on successful deal basis' salesperson!
May be you put me to a wrong person or he was not in a right frame of
mind! I wonder if thats the way any matured professional treats the
potential clients! My overall impression of the whole exercise was
like facing a fake, scandalous, non-committal sales-deal; which does
not guarantee any performance or results.

In spite of this impression, I am giving this feedback to you, because
somewhere at the back of my mind I am convinced about the genuineness
of RDG. So I am still open for the deal, but on getting satisfied
about the specific questions and the 'payment on performance' basis.
In todays market of 90 days and 120 days credits, I can not offer any
upfront payment. Get me a suitable job, take complete service charges
from the first salary.

Whatever is your decision on taking me on your client list, please
convey me your decision a.s.a.p.
