Just making a list of my favourite artists in descending orders
Male Singers
(1) Kishore Kumar
(2) Jagjit Singh - Manna Dey
(3) Suresh Wadkar - Hariharan - Shankar Maha Devan - Amit Kumar
(4) Talt Mehmood - Hemant Kumar
(5) Rafi - only when he sings for SDB
(6) Sonu Nigam - Abhijeet in new singers. Not great but they are different from crowd
At bottom - Kumar Sanu - Shabbir Kumar - Mohammed Aziz - Mahendra Kapoor
Female singers
(1) to (10) - Lata Mangeshkar
(11) Asha Bhosle
(12) Suman Kalyanpur (Her only crime was that she sounded almost like Lata)
The problem facing current singers is the high standards set by Mangeshkar sisters. Alka Yagnik or Sadhna Sargam or Kavita or Sunidhi Chauhan cannot even dream of reaching that heights. They are good singers, but have their limitations. Combined with that the quality of music.
Favourite Music Directors
(1) RD Burman
(2) SD Burman / Madan Mohan / Salil Chowdhury
(3) Jaidev / Khayyam / AR Rehman
(4) Naushad / Jatin Lalit / Shankar Jaikishan
Favourite lyricists
(1) Gulzar
(2) Sahir Ludhiyanvi / Kaifi Azmi
Rest of the group - Majrooh-Hasrat Jaipuri - Shailendra - Anand Bakshi are lyricists first and poet next.
Jaaved Akhtar is good, but I cannot forgive him for "Ek DO Teen Char" which has "Biraha ki chakki mein main pis gayee"
Difficult to choose from so many great musicians.

"Mah deah, there is much more money to be made in the destruction of civilization than in building it up."
-- Rhett Butler in "Gone with the Wind"
Interesting to note that Laxmikant Pyarelal are no-one's favourites so far in this thread, and look at the number of filmfare awards they won during their days!......I think that tells a lot about the authenticity of the so called Indian Oscars.
Compared to that RD won very few awards (Sanam Teri Kasam, Masoom and 1942), and he is every one's favourite! (Including mine)...Kuchh aur hi mazaa hai RD ke ganon mein....
My favourite albums are Teesri Manzil, Amar Prem, Kati Patang, Aap Ki Kasam, Mehbooba, Ajnabee, Mere Jeewan Sathi(O mere dil ke chain), Jawani Diwani, Khel Khel Mein, Padosan, Anamika, Parichay, Ghar, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Love Story, Masoom, All Gulzar Movies(Aandhi, Kinara,Ijazat, Khushboo), Yadon Ki Barat, Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Sholay, ........bahut saari hain kaun si likhoon, kaunsi nahin!
I think RD used Kishore's voice the best. I remember almost going into a depression the day Kishore Kumar died in 1987!
Rest later
Vishal

I think LP did great only in their first 2 movies - Parasmani and Dosti.
After that LP began dishing out cheap commercial \"filmi\" junk.
Together with Anand Bakshi as the song writer, they made lot of popular commercial songs, but all very filmi junk.
