I got an email from someone who read my earlier posts. The question was why we need all those soft skills when we have education and experience. Let me give a quick example. Two yrs back I had an opportunity (unfortunately) to help a desi immigrant who could not get a job for almost a year. He lives with his uncle whom I know. That’s how it started. This guy has a computer science degree and experience in Oracle. I spoke to a contact of mine in a consulting firm and got this desi a contract job that would have continued towards a permanent full time job. After three months the guy was let go.

It was a bitter experience for me. It was my mistake not looking into his English language skills of this guy. I was told by my contact that our desi dude could hardly speak two full sentences in English correctly. I was told that he used to nod his head to say Yes or No. His programming background is good, but he lacked other skills, basic skill of speaking English. Now he is doing some odd jobs, as heard from his uncle.

(I don't want to see any fight wrt CBSE or ICSE, or whatever they are; what I am posting is based on my own experience in Canada)

My question would be - why consider speaking of a language as a soft skill? It is like any other physical/mental skill (plumbing, accounting, law, programing etc.) which all emerge or develop with study of the subject and constant use and upgradation.

I agree.

Although it does imply (based on Desi in Ottawa's post) that till that time you have acquired the said soft skill, you may not get "the Job".

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
