For anybody listening to the program "Punjabi Lehran" at 8 AM on Radio 530, they must have noticed, that the program announcer is changed.

Pinky did a fantastic job of compering the programme, as she really had a good understanding of Hindi Film Music. I wonder, what was the reason they sacked her. Suprisingly, I saw her photo in Saturday's Toronto Star, in an ad by Radio AM530

The new compere, first of all, does not have a script to read, but does a spontaneous annoucement. Hence most of the time, she is a loss of words and unable to clearly express herself. Not to mention, that most of the time she is speaking in English rather than Hindi.

Also, her choice of songs is horrible.

I have just stopped listening to that channel. I do not think, complaining to Punjabi Lehran guys is going to help

Every host has their own style and way of presenting. When Pinky was new, she was in the same boat as Poornima is today, but with time Pinky improved herself. I am sure Poornima will improve too, I believe she is trying to adjust first to the technical aspect of the radio(which is very important), and once she is all expert in it , she can concentrate more on the programming. Her choice of songs is not that bad. We should allow her some time.

But its sad that Pinky has to go despite her dedication and time to the show. Wish her all the best!

As a regular listener to AM530, I doubt this claim. Pinky sounded professional and knowledgeable right from the first week of her show.

Since when did radio announcers started concentrating on the technical aspects of the radio? Isn't is the job of technicians????

A radio announcer fumbling or finding herself at loss of word is really a pathetic scenario. Just because it is an ethnic radio station, does not mean that it should churn out inferior-quality programmes.

I have heard the reviews of fm radio stations in India. Everybody says they do a very decent job with programming. If we can give a quality output in our own country, why not here?

Try applying the same principle on non-ethnic professional radio stations like 92.5 fm or 97.3 fm or 103.5 fm. Ask them, how many listeners can those biggies afford to lose on account of a new announcer.

Or apply this scenario to a larger corporate world. How many companies trust their freshers or co-ops with responsibilities that can sink or swim the company?

I am not being critical of the announcer herself. I am just trying to say, that the radio should have behaved in a very professional manner, and tried to put the responsibilities on new announcer slowly, rather than exposing her directly to the air on first day.

I am writing all this stuff, not as a critic, but as a staunch devotee of Hindi Film Music, who has been listening to All India Radio and Vividh Bharti since I was a kid. I like listening to good Hindi songs, and I prefer, that I do not run out of that luxury in this alien land.

At first Ingrid on Hot like Pepper, and now Pinky on Punjabi Lehran has shown us, what output they can provide with dedication and hard work.

We are accepting whatever is imposed upon us, just because there is almost nil competition. Bring some more competition in this field, and see what stuff you get!!!!!!!!!

First of all, I think we need to understand that those non-ethnic professional radio stations only hire radio graduates and hence there is competition there. Since our desis are famous for doing things a little differently, and so there is no competition. We desis definately need more competition in radio broadcasting, especially in Toronto. Maybe our present or next generations can enroll into taking a Diploma in Broadcasting to improve things better.

And you are very right about that the radio should have behaved in a very professional manner, and tried to put the responsibilities on new announcer slowly, rather than exposing her directly to the air on first day.
Its noticable at times that the announcer isn't having any technical help or other in the studio, which is quite sad in a way.

But turning off the radio won't help the situation. It would be like backing off a situation than improving it. Lets move forward together to make a difference. I actually did phone the announcer to suggest a few things as I felt that someone should tell them what changes are required. She is definately trying, and I know its not easy to be a radio host. It takes a lot of work, this is one job that looks very glamorous on the outside, but is the most hard task to do. One has to have all ingredients in proper proportion to make it sound all good and smooth.

Hey Meghal,

What is your opinion about Poornima now? Still the same or she sounds better.

I had the same feeling which you have expressed when she started, but now she seems to be very much in command and plays on really nice songs too. I am though not very happy with Edward Jones coming in three days a week while I am driving and listening to that program.

To me, Purnima sounds more like a 'Human Resource Development professional or may be a Trainer'. She sounds like a 'Behanji' of a 'Govt. School' of India.
Many people do not want to listen K.L.Sehgal or songs like 'Teri Duniya se ho ke majboor chala....' in the MORNING but 'No Choice'.
In the last couple of years, the only thing she has learned is to have some modulations in her voice while on-air otherwise, I think, Punjabi Lehran program listeners do not tune-in because of her but because of the 'prime time slot' and as I said, they do not have any other choice.
