With so much talk going on about Desi's landing up in doing labour jobs, i feel like sharing some information on the shortage of skilled trades in Ontario and how to get into the high paying skilled trades market.

The easiest job to get into is the unregulated labour jobs paying bare minimum wages and such jobs are usually offerred by the lowest rung of industrial units. Unfortunately, this unregulated labour market offer a big trap for the new immigrants. With immediate prospect of $8-9 /hr they get into trap and then it gets hard to get out of.

One the flip side , the world which i see in my profession everyday is very different. Skilled trades are in very short supply. A 3-4 yr experienced plumber/carpenter/electrician can easily make over $65 k on the lower side to over $80 - 100 k on the high side in Toronto region.

Now how to get into skilled trades thru unions ....the negative side of it is that one has to spend first 2-3 years as an apprentice ie working under a skilled person . Average apprentice gets about $12-$18 and has to complete certain number of hours to move on to next level.

Once the minimum hour reqmt is complete the apprentice becomes a journeyman, sometimes a simple certification is reqd to become an independent skilled worker called Journeyman . A journeyman commands a much higher wage ...in $30 range for 4 days a week, 5th day is double time !! (as per union rules in ontario ) there are many many other great benefits these union guys enjoy....7.5 hrs of work perday $8 flat travel allowance perday if you work in high traffic areas etc !!!), no tension , pretty relaxed environment, and very decent salaries. A 10-15 yr experienced electrician easily makes much more than most management people make in any company.

Now, how to get into a first step into skilled trades thru unions..

Here is a good site , it will give you the following insights 1. what is required get into each different trade,2. how much they make, 3. what are the job prospects of that industry in coming future.4. what to expect in working activities and much more ...

Think about it .... if at al you have to get into a labor job ....get into unionized jobs ...you will never be exploited when you work thru unions.

Please dont get me wrong here , I am NOT encouraging educated people to go into thses trades ( most of these trades do not need more than 12 std education)...this is just a resource i wanted to share for people who are stuck in menial low paying jobs . This is only to help them to get into mainstream regulated labour market and have some hope for better future ,and better salaries, in whatever trade they get into.

Goodluck to all and may everyone's dream come true one day.

Alright ...i'll admit...i am posting this reply to bump this thread to top.

I wonder why a bunch of guys spend hours pondering over half baked theories of conspiracy to keep desis in lower paying jobs.

Here is a thread with detailed step by step info on how to make over 65k+ in 3 yrs flat and no one bothers to take note.

Agreed, but this is only meant for those engaged in menial minimum wage labour jobs.
It is anytime better to become an electrician and earn 4 times more and be protected against exploitation than continue doing menial jobs in dingy industrial units.

Its goingto be gradual.....Once they are at a dead end they will realize no use in dreaming about getting an office job in your field and willl end up in the above jobs....basically one has to compromise with yourself.
