I have done a bit of reading but guys who have used digital cameras, can you tell the basic features one should look for before purchasing for making fairly good pictures.
What are the mistakes which you think you did which could have been avoided by many others who are interested in purchasing one.
Tks

The first question would be...what is your budget ! Based on that once can decide where to proceed

Wish I was cheeky... Again I ask Thee...what is thy Budget... and what exactly do you need the camera for ? For professional level photography or just for casual use... There are digital cameras that range between 100$ - 2000$, with varied features and options.
So back to the question... First indicate your budget and then indicate if its for professional avant grade photography or just for dady-to-day stuff

Okie.. now Your specs can give us a better idea..
I would suggest narrowing down your choices to 3 specific brands
1.) Canon (always the best)
2.) Minolta &
3.) Olympus
4.) Pentax
Before you buy the camera, find out
1.) What is the "mega pixel" value of of the camera. The higher the mega pixel value, the better the picture quality. Ppl often tend to make a compromise here. Digital photography is resolution dependent, unlike analog photography. So the more # of "pixels" in the picture, the better the resolution of the image
2.) Find out how many pictures you can use in the SP mode (or whatever they call it). In other words find out how many pictures you can take in "Uncompressed mode". If you compress the image in your camera, then you will lose the picture quality. I know this as this is my work aka "bread n butter". Keywords to be looking for TIFF/BMP . That is because you can make print copies of uncompressed images and they will be nearly the same as the original scene being imaged. However, if you wish to compress them then u should download them on your computer and then use some good compression tools to store them as JPEG or JPEG2000. (Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com) would be one such example. Avoid compressing the images using the built in compression routines provided in the most Camera's today.
3.) Find out if the camera has a facility for including a flash. Canon has this facility (but the price is exhorbitant)
On Doing a search on Future shop, I could only find camera;s between 3-3.9 Mega Pixels for your Budget
But an Olympus Camera has the facility to capture RAW images...

Notice that it also have a facility for placing a Flash bulb !
& Lastly
I am/was not bugging you !
